Unbridled's Song is interesting, the whole US/Storm Cat mix. I was thinking Indian Charlie, Rahy or Dixie Union if I need to keep the costs down. I also need the foal to be commercial, so Unbridled's Song really fits the bill! Thank you again for the comments.

re: Readers Comment On Readers' Horses -- Plus New Poll

To Kelly, one big thing stands out about your mare. She is tail-female to Gambetta/Rough Shod which is an outstanding female family. This is who Big Brown is inbred to. I would look for a stallion who offers a line of this family, and if possible a line of Somethingroyal through Secretariat. Eavesdropper comes to mind, but the fee is $7500 and I'm not sure how picky they are about his mares.

I do agree with the above comments that you would do better picking up another mare at a sale, but if you want to do this for sentimental reasons and don't mind spending the money, go for it! You can't go wrong inbreeding to Rough Shod and here you own a direct female descendent.

re: Readers Comment On Readers' Horses -- Plus New Poll

Amanda,

As soon as you mentioned your mare, I thought of Cherokee Run. This cross taps in on Nasrullah through a modern day sire success.

Additionally, it gives you an outcross that is likely to be respected at the sales. Zanjero is just one recent colt that should solidify the potential of this cross.

Giants Causeway is certainly hot, but you will pay for the service. I like that the cross concentrates on Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector.

With today's market, one must consider the progeny potential of the mare's offspring when they select a stud fee range.

There are a number of very nice Storm Cat line stallions out there. Lion Heart is off to a fine start.

Best of luck,

We were thinking a Giants Causeway approach.

She is a non starter, 10 yr old mare, produced 2 foals (Storm Cat colt and Distorted Humor filly).

By A.P. Indy out of an Unbridled mare, her fam is from the direct family of Angel Fever/Fusaichi Pegasus and so she has Halo and Danzig directly in her dams side.

Ideas on new stallions? Thanks

Hersman

Just a suggestion concerning Kelly and Luknluv:

With the market the way it is, I would suggest looking at Keeneland for a mare that is due to foal in 2009. You can often find bargains that are in foal to some really nice stallions.

This would eliminate your cost of stud fees and care of the in-foal mare. It would also allow you to enjoy having the new hopeful, very soon.

Although Luknluv posted several good runs, she is in the class of horses that will not likely have a baby sell for an outrageous amount if you decide to sell.

If you are breeding to race, and you want to hold on to her then forget about what's hot and what's not and breed to the stallion that will be the best suited for her. This will help you reduce expense when it comes to stud fees.

Hersman

dray33 has done an excellent job picking viable racing and commercial stallion prospects for the mares listed.

I looked at Perfectly Natural. Her dam's side is a real plus: Mr. Prospector, Seattle Slew, and Alydar. Depending on budget, I would suggest that this mare be taken to Unbridled's Song.

My intention in her 2009 breeding would be to complement her versatility and speed with stamina.

If budget is a factor and you are looking for a quality outcross. Holy Bull may fit the bill. Even though, the dosage index seems to come in a little high, this outcross has already produced some nice racehorses. In my opinion, you have a game filly in Perfectly Natural. Given the right cross, she could produce a classic type horse.
