He won a Guineas trial, the Craven; he ran 2nd by 6 in the Derby, he was 2nd by 2 in the St. James Palace S, was beaten 5 in the Eclipse S. He won a bunch of second level races in the autumn, a couple of which had only two runners, having shown himself not quite up to the top level at that time. Like Lost Code, who won 7 stakes races as a 3yo, most of them second level, he couldn't quite beat the best horses. Admirable seasons they each had at 3 but not the best of their year.

He won the Coronation Cup and Doncaster Cup as a 4yo 1924, but he didn't win the Eclipse S, or Ascot Gold Cup (third at even money), or the Princess of Wales S (third, beaten 5 lengths by Solario) nor the Jockey Club S (second to a 3yo filly). Good but no world beater.

As to his sire line, the last good sire from the line was Pepenador, a top sire in Argentina, a son of Lucky Debonair. His offspring included Regidor (GP Carlos Pelligrini), Madrugador (Polla=2000 Guineas),Triplicador (won two major Derby preps), Evaluado (SW, 2nd Derby), Double Paid (GP 25 de Mayo, etc.) and some top fillies. None of his sons except Triplicador has made much of a splash at stud, and he was not a huge success.

Scot's reply: I believe St. Germans was a 3-year-old (not 4) in 1924 when he won the Craven, Lowther, Royal Post, Limekiln, Liverpool St. Leger, and Hampton Court Great Three-Year-Old Stakes. His Burwell Stakes and Coronation and Doncaster Cups came at 4.

re: Who's the Famous Thoroughbred?
Well, you drove me crazy with this one, today. Instead of readying for Keeneland, I spent my time on this. I knew three off the top of my head (#s 2,5,6). #3 was easy to find; #1 took some work-until I noticed "1927" at bottom of picture; but #4 took a bit of deduction followed by produce record research on Pedigree Query (which failed to show any produce on the likely candidate-followed by checking a CD. Anyway, I have all six:

#1- Anita Peabody

#2-Battleship

#3-Holystone
