I did not see the original article and would be amazed if Flashmans Papers was ever mentioned as a potential sire. Am I correct in thinking this was the implication? I own a half sister in foal to his sire so would be happy!!

Scot's reply: Flashman's Papers did indeed meet the qualifications for "potential sire" in that study. I see he's already raced (and won) in 2010, and I'd agree it's unlikely that he'll actually make it to a breeding shed this year -- but who knows! Best of luck with your Exceed And Excel (AUS) foal.

Scot's reply: All Pride (pedigree) is by a son of Surumu out of a daughter of Allegretta. Interestingly, Surumu is a Birkhahn/Tantieme cross and Allegretta is from the Tantieme line with Birkhahn as a second damsire. All Pride is half-brother to Always Awesome, who I used as an example in a previous blog post about Fasig-Tipton's online catalog page updates.

German mares are a great source of soundness and stamina. I don't see a German stallion making it just yet here in the State unless Adena Springs takes a chance on something different like they did with El Prado.

The German lines in many ways are superior to our in that they don't allow stallions racing on medication to stand at stud. This helps purge many bad qualities out of their stock.

Nice speedy domestic stallion on top of some good old fashioned, sound German stock. Classic winners galore!!

Do you have any information on the 1930s race mare Nereide, who won the Deutsches Derby? What are her foal's impact on racing/breeding, as well as her own?

Scot's reply: Here are a few basics... perhaps a reader who's studied German breeding history can supply more information. Nereide (GER) was born in 1933 and was by Laland (GER), the fifth generation of the Trachenberg (GER) sire line developed in Germany; the larger line was Highflyer (GB)'s son Sir Peter (GB) through Buccaneer (GB). Nereide's dam was the 1924 mare Nella da Gubbio (ITY) (by Grand Parade (GB) from the Orme (GB) line). Her dam, the family 4-r mare Nera Di Bicci, was a Tesio mare. Nereide had three registered foals: Nuvolari (GER) and Nordlicht were stakes-winning Oleander (GER) sons who became sires. Daughter Nerepha (by Pharis II (FR)), had a stakes-winning gelding and another son that did not serve at stud.

Are they going to retire Proudinsky this year?

Scot's reply: Proudinsky was scratched from a Belmont grade III a few weeks ago in what would have been a comeback from several months off. It seems unlikely that he'll actually go to stud in 2010 if he's in good racing form -- with the stallion market as it is, the better choice for a horse such as this is probably to keep him at the track.
