I read the book soon after publication in the '70's and having worked on many horse farms, trained and ridden myself, I'd say it is for the most part well done. I do consider Outlaw Prince's final injury a bit far-fetched-someone here does not know about horses' feet and what can be done to them!

I considered the film a maudlin travesty.

This brings back great memories of reading this book twenty plus years ago. I didn't think the movie did it justice. Well worth the read if you can find it!

I didn't know it was a book! I saw it on TV when it first came out...I may even still have it on a VHS tape (I'd have to check in the basement) if anyone is interested in a copy. I loved it as it was the first "real" horse racing production I had seen outside of Phar Lap.

I still remember reading this book. As an author who involves Throughbreds in my plots, it often comes to mind. I think Diane Ladd played the lead role in the TV series. It is a very good read. Very factual, and I still recall the value of the War Admiral broodmare. Wish some were still around !

I'm dating myself, but I bought this book new and still have it. It is wonderful and being a pedigree aficianado, it's very insightful and interesting. A very good read!

This book was made into a TV miniseries in the 1980s, I think... I have seen reruns of it a couple of times. It was at times overly melodramatic but as you note, the "everyday details" of a breeding farm were nicely done and surprisingly accurate for a TV production.
