King`s Silver Son!! He could possibly be the best closer of all this year, but will have to run 1st or 2nd at Oaklawn to get in.

I think the Derby basically comes down to whether Big Brown is a superhorse or not. If he is the race is over. If he isn't, it's wide open as to who will win. Colonel John is an obvious contender based on his brilliant turn of foot the last eighth mile in the SA Derby..

Watch out for the closers! With War Pass, Recapture The Glory, and Big Brown, and I am sure a couple others there will be a battle up front at the Derby. We know Colonel John is a big finisher, and will see what Pyro has to offer this weekend. But watch out for Smooth Air who began to start moving on Big Brown at the end and with another 1/8 of a mile he would have got there easily and I think with increasing speed. Court Vision may be a sleeper too. He can have a big finish too. I think two of the above three will be on the ticket at the derby. With all the horses I listed in this note you may have the exacta and the Tri too.

My longshot is another Asmussen horse named King`s Silver Son. It`s taken him a while to get going, but his late run in the Rebel was impressive. He needs a big effort in next week`s Arkansas Derby to get in the hunt with graded earnings.

Great comments from above. My longshot pick for the Derby right now is: Smooth Air. I saw his races, the Hutchinson and the Florida Derby via the Internet. I think this horse can track the pace and make a late run. We'll see.

Thanks, Jason, for your usual fine insight-- this time into Marty Wolfson not hearing the siren call and listening to the horse instead? I gather he is a trainer akin to Shug McGaughey-- never push the horse, the horse will tell you when he is ready to step up? Theoretical-- will the owners push if Golden Spikes wins the IL Derby?

I don't know who'll be the next Cannonero, but if there IS one this year, he'll be a good one as I saw Cannonero work at Santa Anita as a four year old, and he was a beautiful and strong animal---certainly the best of his year, 1971, my first Derby, won by a real good one, Cannonero II......

Tomcito at 100-1 for the KYD? I'd bet those odds! They'll be sweating that out on Saturday for the FLD. If he finishes in the money (or wins) and secures the cash for a gate the First Saturday in May they'll be crying.

Reminds me of an article on the recently deceased Winning Colors. It recounted that her grooms in the Lukas barn knew she had something so they pooled money and went to Mexico where they found a futures book that was giving over 100-1 odds on her for the Derby. They made a very nice return on their "inside information".

Glad you found Numaany, he is on my list to add to RTTR contest if he does well Saturday and they bring him early to Kentucky.

Others I like- Texas Wildcater & Roman Emperor who ran with Visionaire. Odds will be juicy...
