I just hope that Jerry puts Chocolate Candy's REAL RIDER on him in the Derby -- Russel Baze. That ride he received in The Santa Anita D., was poor, very poor.

Why did they shorten the FOY Stakes?.That make no sense whatsoever.If anything they should've shortened the Holy Bull to 1mile,the FOY to 1 1/16 and with the FLA.Derby at 1 1/8,that's a natural progression that'll sort-out the pretenders from the contenders right?..Speaking of>..

The Sham Stakes looks like it's filled with nothing but "pretenders". The Pamps' and TTP are the headliners in the race and they're not that good,so far.If these 2 are ever going to win a Stakes race @ 1 1/8miles,it'll be against this sorry bunch.

The FOY is loaded with speed,so I'll take the stalking Beethoven on the cut-back in distance.He should improve off his last race and his last work-out was a perfect tightner(finishing fast)...BUT..the way Gulfstream Park plays,I won't be surprised if any of the front-runners hang on for the win,in which case I won't take them too seriously as contenders for the Derby..Remember this race is at a mile this year.Most of these horses are going to find out if they want to run more than 7f anyhow.

I saw the El Camino and he looked good. But me personnally i still have some questions. My question is this what does it do usually take to win the kentucky derby dirt experence. And untill he is tested on dirt no one knows. But he has an excellent chance to be in the top ten.

Great interview. I think Chocolate Candy had a legitimate shot. We always keep talking about one of the derby rules goes out the window, well with Chocolate candy, e can the first to win who race only on synthetics. he is in my top 5 list.

What is so exiting about this is that Hollendorfer does not put horses into spots where they are not competitive. He's shipped CC to Del Mar, Hollywood, and Golden Gate and won. This is NOT derby fever. In fact I You Tubed the Cash Call and I think something came out on Chocolate Candy in deep stretch after that jockey got into the horse left handed. He may have been even closer to Pioneer than previously thought. I'm trying to find the Jockey's comments.

Jerry Hollendorfer really deserves a Derby win. He is one of the best trainers around and has had so much success. I think Chocolate Candy may very well be his ticket and I hope he is. I would love to see him win.

On a side note, he mentioned that shipping horses is hard on them and that's true but I know of one horse who loved to ship and that was Sunday Silence. He loved his plane rides! Very unusual.

I see some similarities between Chocolate Candy and Charismatic. I know Chocolate Candy didn't break his maiden in a claiming race & has never run for a claiming tag, but Charismatic had 14 or so starts before the Derby, ran just modest Beyers leading up to the Lexington and even after the Lexington was dismissed as a legitimate Derby contender (seems taking that horse off bute was the key). Everyone just thought Lukas was doing his usual and just putting another "Derby" horse in the starting gate. Well, Chocolate Candy will have 10 or so starts before the Derby, has just run modest Beyers and it seems everyone thinks he's a cut below, alah Charismatic. Just an observation, but if he runs like Charismatic and pays the same price as Charismatic did in the Derby, then some people are going to be happy campers after the Derby. Back who you like and don't worry about what the so-called experts think.

Great interview, Jason. I always liked this colt and to me, he's getting that great experience and is improving with every race. His pedigree is stunning. By a rising star sire in Candy Ride, he's not only out of a Seattle Slew mare, his second dam is a half-sister to Affirmed (by Alydar)! More than that, he is an RF (Rasmussen Factor) as he is deliciously inbred to Alanesian, through her daughter Herbaklesian and her son, Boldnesian, winner of the SA Derby and tail-male grandsire of Seattle Slew. (Alanesian also produced the fabulous racemare, Princessnesian, who defeated males in the Hollywood Gold Cup. Lots to like about Chocolate Candy, and I don't see any reason he shouldn't run well on dirt....

I would love to see Hollendorfer win the Derby but I just don't think that Chocolate Candy is a grade 1 type of horse. He kind of reminds me of McCann's Mojave, a very useful grade 3 horse.

I see him winning races like the Sir Barton, not the Preakness.

Mr Hollendofer is one of the true horsemen that get overlooked in the showbiz part of this game. He sends out horses ready to run and they do run, not just once or twice. Kudos to him his crew and his owners who realize that while we need money to stay in this game we also need the horses to keep going.
