My gut says we dont see a single one of those names in the gate though except for maybe Soaring Empire... i beleive it was Shakespeare that said "what's in a name? that which we call a rose" - well this years rose had sore shins... . .

MS, I as fortunate enough to be in the right spot at the right time when director saw my derby blazer, and asked me to be in the movie Secretariat. I was in 5 scenes at the paddock which lasted from 10 seconds to 2 minutes. Hope they do not edit me out.

Since Dublin has had the surgery, I am now a Dublin fan. Remember 1985 and Tank's Prospect win in the Preakness. He also had the operation between the Derby and Preakness, and was trained by D Wayne.

As far as a name, I'm leaning towards Interactif, Conveyance, & American Lion.

Jacksons Bend would have been ok, but after a year of Jess Jackson, Michael Jackson, The Jacksons of PA, and Jessie Jackson, I'd rather not hear it. (Jaxson would have been much better)

oh, and to Greg J, not a snowball's chance in a crockpot that you'll hear Len-te-nor being called in that special race on the first Saturday in May.

Joe C.: I've been keeping up (as I Can) on the Secretariat movie and it sounds like they're going to ignore Riva Ridge to concentrate on Secretariat "saving" Meadow Stables. If that's true, there will be two of us who will be pretty pissed off.

Riva Ridge and Sham.

Would have been best of's in any other years.

mz......I LOVE the two names, and especially Minsky, but then I'm a huge fan of trashy comedy. Besides, I'm also a huge fan of one-named horses, and HATE the scrunched up names. And I agree (again) with Criminal Type (you can't tell we both loved the same horse, can you?) that Lost In The Fog was a terrific name for ANY horse. What a special creature he was............

So here's my method for all those who can't see it for the madness: actually, the names are what catch me first and then I check out the horse, UNLESS it's a grey horse, in which case I'm hooked from the first. You should see me on Halloween when they run the Grey Ghost at Monmouth..........THAT is an AAARRRGGGHHH moment! As an addendum, I HATE the NAMES ARRRRR and Doremifasolatido, but LOVE to hear Tom Durkin call their races. I guess what I'm saying is that I have no clue what name will float my boat, but it sure as hell is NOT Smelly!

The hits just keep on comin', don't they?

Cheers and safe trips and I hope everyone has a snowless weekend, but that doesn't look likely, does it?

MAT has it right; I loved the name Majestic Prince and pictures show-it fit! Three years on, the first horse I followed-Riva Ridge-named I think for a WWII battle Penny Chenery Tweedy's then husband was in. My favorite horse, Seattle Slew, he DID make that name, but the book by Steve Cady notes an early workout was attributed to Seattle Sue.

I thought of a couple more good names kind of along the lines of Criminal Type...Dontsellmetofelons and Request for Parole. I also think Lost in the Fog was a GREAT name for a horse whose owner resided in San Fransisco.

I also like names taken from sire / dam and one of my favorites was Yankee Affair (sire Northern Fling) and thought it was appropriate he was a gelding.

Looking at this year's crop of three-year-old colts, I would have to say that Aspire has the best Derby-sounding name of the bunch. However Aspire has not worked since the Breeders' Cup. Does anyone have any info on what his current status is?

I love names that are really descriptive like the grey horses Gray Ghost, Hi Ho Silver, White Lightning and Great White Shark. Do you have any Gray Poo Pon? (Poor thing is by Grub out of Woo Wee!) And Arctic White - a t'bred stallion actually registered as a white horse!

Of course, there are those that liked to add a bit of mystery to the naming process like rugged old Red Scamper who spent 9 years in the trenches at Aqueduct and Belmont before being retired to stud. Red Scamper is and always has been a lovely pale grey.

It Aint Easy - Mr. F a flop? runs 4 times, wins 3 including a grade 3. Finsihes 3rd to IWR in the Gotham in his third race, who ran a 0 on the Rag sheets that day.

The Flop ran a bullet today at Palm Meadows, for what its worth!
