&lt;p&gt;It&amp;#39;s rather amazing that in a $10,000,000 race the first and second should have very commercially obscure pedigrees, and inbreeding to genetic relatives. However, it&amp;#39;s not as unusual as you might think for a good runner to have a sire and dam (or sire and broodmare sire) bred on the same cross. We&amp;#39;ve nicknamed it the &amp;quot;Parallel Pattern.&amp;quot; It works quite well reversed too. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;His sire, Lizard Island, is a son of Lure out of a daughter of Crimson Saint . . . he&amp;#39;s a close relative to Storm Cat.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As with the Cup winner, close genetic relatives are paired. &amp;nbsp;In this case the pedigree has full siblings 4x4. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Isn&amp;#39;t it rare to see a top runner having both sire and dam bred on the same cross? &amp;nbsp;Here Lizard Island (sire) and Annsfield (dam) are both by Northern Dancer line sires, out of Bold Ruler line mares. &amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
