A talented son of Smart Strike emerges as a leading Kentucky Derby (gr. I) hopeful; the race goes to a rival who benefits from a rail-hugging ride from Calvin Borel; but the Smart Strike son rebounds to prove his classic credentials

re: Second Time Lucky

Hi Shelley,

The problem with importing a Monsun, Galileo, etc. son, is that it would be very hard to get outside breeders to support them.

Ribot was in a different era, when turf and dirt horses were a lot less specialized types.

Theatrical was a European turf stayer (although he actually had a lot of speed), but he had an owner who didn't mind waiting for staying turf horses to develop.

Thanks for bringing that up !

They were wondering if the Belmont could be shortened up to SIX furlongs in order to make the Triple Crown more competitive ! I found that very disturbing ! Stamina in the American Thoroughbred is in deep trouble if we dont start importing some stamina from elsewhere ! I don't see why we could'nt import some Turf sires from Europe i.e Cape Cross , Monsun , Galileo and others ! Ribot was imported from Italy as a turf sire and look at his influence today ! We need to try something ? What's your take on this ?

Smart Strike has been in the forefront of thoroughbred news through his sons English Channel, 2007 Preakness winner Curlin,as Broodmare sire of 2009 Kentucky Derby winner,Mine that Bird;his son Looking at Lucky, not to mention as the Brood Mare sire of Preakness second place First Dude who appears to be a serious race horse. Sooner than later Smart Strike will have his Kentucky Derby winner.

I think Bob Baffert is doing the right thing giving the horse sometime of and i'm sure the Travers at Saratoga will be one of the races considered. Smart Strike has done well at stud and it's good to see him get a second Preakness winner.
