There have been a couple of private studies that have done a lot more on mtDNA parentage than the initial study by Dr Hill. Dr Stephen Harrison outlined a study in 2006 that showed similar results as Dr Hill and it might be worth taking a look at his site www.thoroughbredgenetics.com.

We are working on a Pedigree Seminar with the Blood Horse later in the year and Dr Hill will be one of the speakers there so you may be able to get your questions answered there.

This is the third time i am going to make this post. i must be having technical difficulties. Yes, i read Dr. Hill's research a few years ago when it was released. Are you aware of any follow up study with a larger sample? I emailed both Thoroughbred Heritage and Dr. Hill asking this question but i never received a response. Thank you

But the second leg of the English and the third leg of the American are also run on the same day, the first Saturday in June and this time comparisons can be made not only for future important races but also for breeding purposes as both races are at 12 furlongs. It is interesting to note both fancied runners in the Belmont trained by Nick Zito are by son's of AP Indy, Ice Box by Pulpit and Fly Down by Mineshaft and I will be looking forward to see how both perform. In the Epsom Derby I have a real soft spot for Bullet Train as he represents the last crop of 3 year olds by that great sire Sadler's Wells and would'nt you know it one of Sadler's Wells son's Montjue is the sire of the race favourite, Jan Vameer.

Interesting comments. Not to be alarmist, but the Uvira family is one of a few that I treat with a little skepticism in regards to matrilineal inheritance.

Are you aware of the mtDNA studies completed by Dr Hill, et al and Dr Harrison? These studies found that there are quite a lot of errors in female families when measuring mtDNA haplotypes which are passed down mother to daughter and can be measured for conformity. It is my understanding that the Uvira family, along with the Mumtaz Mahal family (no 9 on the Bruce Lowe system) and a couple of other notable female families have errors in them as far as some branches of these did not have the same haplotype as others that the General Stud Book, and the Lowe numbers had them classified in.
