National Hunt = Jump Racing.

National Hunt horses don't have to be Thoroughbreds but almost all are. There are some French lines that aren't pure Tbred. Perhaps Alan knows more about this...

Bumpers are flat races (no jumps) for inexperienced horses with aims to eventually go jumping. They are ridden by jump jockeys at a National Hunt race meeting. Normally the distances are 14 to 20 furlongs.

Hurdles are events with obstacles at least 3.5 feet high. Races are at least 2 miles with at least 8 hurdles.

Steeplechase events have fences at least 4.5 feet high as well as other obstacles.

Non thoroughbreds? Half-breds? And is there still a "Half-Bred Stud Book"? I read about how they maintained a separate stud book for horses considered "non-t'breds" by the English after the Jersey Act in 1913 or whatever.
