As I recall, Relaunch suffered a bowed tendon, but returned later to win more stakes. So, I wouldn't characterize him as an "iron horse" by any means. Apparently, the rigors of racing did get to him...Also, it seems that most now take it as a given that today's horses are far less durable/sound than in years past. Those top horses of yesteryear did tend to make more starts, but that in itself offers little evidence for the less durable assumption. There are many variables to be considered, not least is the advent of The Breeders' Cup. I don't read where any are suggesting that the european horses of before, or now, were/are equally less durable. Take a look at the lifetime starts for many of Europe's finest, now and before.

I do believe these horses were running on NO medication. Could it be? No medication and three races in three weeks, boy the horses of today are pitiful.

In 1980, Relaunch ran 3rd to Spectacular Bid in the San Fernando (gr. II), then 4th (and last) to him in the Strub (gr. I) after setting the grueling pace that helped Spectacular Bid set the world record for 10 furlongs.

Relaunch was a very successful sire and broodmare sire, and generally a much better pedigree influence than Spectacular Bid. Bid's legacy is on the racetrack.

Seems to me Relaunch was in Spectacular Bids' Derby and also became noted as a sire of off track runners. Just off the top of my head. How does he stack up against The Bids progeny?

The Relaunch line of In Reality may be the saving grace for this sire line that goes to Man O'War. Tiznow is doing fantastic and his sons are sought after as sires. I only wish Tizbud would be brought to Kentucky and given a shot at better mares. Two sires from the same line is better than one. Tiznow is out of range price wise for alot of breeders. Tizbud would breed 100 mares at $10,000. One can dream ????
