His line came from Sweep via near-HotY Hillsdale.

Smart had the misfortune to be a dirt stayer (10f+) when that was starting to go out of style. His big wins were the MasCap (10f), Manhattan H (12f) and Gallant Fox H (13f). As I recall, he developed low fertility quite young.

I own a rescue Thoroughbred-one of the last son's of Skywalker-everyday I look at a heritage of the greatest that ever lived! So glad the Man o War line is still going strong!

Hampton lines through Son-in-Law, Gainsborough, and Teddy. His dam, Plagiarizing, is interesting, with the combination of full brother and sister, Malindi on her sire’s side, and Nasrullah on her dam’s side. The MOW/Fair Play continues with Warfare’s dam going to War Glory and the dam line containing Friar Rock. More Hampton with Alibhai. You also find the horse, Djebel top and bottom with him. Seems like Caller ID ought to like the lines brought in by the tail male to MOW.

Trying to see if there’s anything showing up in the mares Caller ID was crossed with to produce the dams of these horses, in combo with the horses sires:

Malibu Magic, grand dam of J P’s Gusto, has Spy song repeated top and bottom, which is MOW/Hastings breeding, and her dam, Dream Harder’s sire, Hard Work, has the Spy Song and his full sister, Sub Rosa, top and bottom, plus Son-in-Law again and Chance Shot by Fair Play.

For Battle Won, a little head scratching but some similarities. Relaunch also has a cross of Spy Song and goes back to MOW mare, Spotted Beauty. Djebel in there again plus The Axe top and bottom.

Expect an Angel carries Valid Appeal 3s x 4d. Her dam line has Alibhai, Djebel, and who should show up again but Mata Hari, dam of Spy Song?

Any time Damascus shows up, Speed Boat will also, a full sister to War Relic, and Mad Hatter, more Fair Play.

I guess I’m saying there’s enough of the MOW/Fair Play lines in Caller ID that it might like the tail mail lines of these three horses. IMHO, MOW should like the Hampton lines with his dam having Merry Hampton by Hampton. However, maybe because of Caller ID’s dam Plagiarizing, a little more speculation on the full brother and sister of Nasrullah and Malindi might be in order and how those lines have nicked with the tail male MOW/Fair Play lines. For now, if I didn’t confuse myself going back and forth, Mata Hari showing up in all of these is interesting, especially for a mare.

It would be interesting to have a TrueNicks evaluation on the mares Man O' War was bred to! Who knows? If Riddle hadn't kept him as mostly a private stallion, perhaps we'd have a plethora of tail male MOW now. MOW certainly did well with what he had. Imagine if he'd gotten the best mares around? Some were OK, but one wonders what might have been....

I pointed out the same things in a blog reply on somebodys JP's Gusto blog of yesterday. For those of us who live & die by the lore and legacy of horse racing, and cut our teeth on Domino, Ben Brush and Fair Play, the 3 pillars of American breeding, its like the phoenix rising from the ashes, and stirring the flame that Tiznow, Bertrando, Cee's Tizzy, and Valid Appeal have started. Bertrando's grandson Bob's Black Jack (Stormy Jack) a world class sprinter and record holder was retired this spring and American Lion and Bullsbay (both Tiznow) have also been retired, adding more logs to that rising fire. Successful Appeal's son Closing Argument has 2 crops and already some stakes winners. And lets not forget Valid Expectations whose son The Daddy has his first crop now on the track & producing winners.

Now if only the breeders who hold the past dear, and who dropped the ball sometimes when the ranks of these progenitors thinned, would send some good mares to Broad Brush's very fast son Include, whose stakes portfolio is slowly building....and about whom the TB Database says this: "2001: Maryland's Champion Older Male & Horse Of The Year.

Earned 13 triple-digit Beyers in his final 15 starts, among which were back-to-back 117s. " After all he and his brother Encaustic, also a stakes winner, are the slim thread to Domino, and that line deserves to be preserved. If anybody had been paying attention back in the 60s when Thinking Cap and his son Smart were at stud, maybe the same could have come to pass for the Ben Brush line. Great runners and prolific stallions came out of the Big 3 foundation stock of America ... you know, back when there were more sportsmen than speculators in the game? I believe in yesterday ...

Speaking of yesterday, someone should erect a statue to the late Frances Genter for the awesome contribution her 2 great horses, In Reality and Unbridled, have made to American thoroughbred breeding in the last 3 decades.
