His sire was a sprinter/miler who set a world-record for a mile on turf. The broodmare sire did win G1 at 1 1/2 miles, but in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe gave the impression that he didn't really see out the trip, and if you look at his Australian starts he had good sprint form (he won the Queensland Derby, then cut back to win a G2 six furlong race, then second in a G2 at seven furlongs, and then won a G2 at a mile). The third dam was very fast, and Champion Two-Year-Old Filly in Ireland.

I would say unless the pace scenario is right, ten furlongs wouldn't be absolutely guaranteed on pedigree.

Interesting topic here. I would be interested to get a transcript of his talk. Quality Road is a perfect example of this. His genotype says he should get 1 1/2 miles base on his breeding. His phenotype says otherwise. He is a short backed, short necked horse with average leg length. Sure enough, anything past 1 1/8 miles and he becomes very beatable. Zenyatta is the best example I can think of where her genotype and phenotype produced exactly what it should have. A large horse with a long neck and body and capable of getting 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 miles on a consistent basis. I know she has never been 1 1/2 miles, but base on her prior races, she would be able to do it.
