Hi Bruce,

The variant is the product of the TrueNicks calculation. Average (1.00) means that the cross gets stakes winners at a rate equal to the sire and broodmare lines. Since the numerical scale is not linear, variants are divided into letter grade bands A, B, C, etc. It's best to use the letter grade to compare matings.

I use your True Nicks for my breeding But I do not know how the Variant works If one mare comes up with a variant of 27/17 what dos it mean Thanks

Hi Billy,

Well, technically they could ship semen, but any resulting foal could not be a registered Thoroughbred as The Jockey Club requires live cover. Also, Thoroughbred semen does not freeze well, and the time to ship it across the globe would be a huge barrier.

There's currently a court case in Australia about the live cover restriction. Here is a recent article about it.
