Hi Alan

Rose Bowl was only 3 years old when she won the 1975 Champion Stakes at Newmarket and the mighty Allez France was a mature 5 year old.That is why I consider that race to be the greatest Rose Bowl ever run.The year after that she would finish second to a 3 year old herself in Vitges.I think the ideal distance for Rose Bowl was 10 furlongs.

On July 19th I am flying into Dublin to take in the Irish Oaks at The Curragh and after that it,s on to Goodwood to see Frankel in the Sussex Stakes.It will be the first time I will have seen Frankel in the flesh but as you know from your archives I touted Frankel even before he run his first race as a 2 year old so there just is,nt any words to describe how much I am looking forward to that.

I remember Rose Bowl well, and Lester getting on and off her at various times (I think mistiming it at one stage, either getting off her when she won, or jumping on her when she got beat). It sticks in my mind that she was really unlucky in the 1,000 Guineas, but she was a very good filly indeed at a mile to ten furlongs.

I suggested that a friend breed her mare to English Channel his first year at stud, and she laughed at me - but because she couldn't afford his stud fee then (not a big time breeder). I've always been in love with English Channel and never thought he was too small or ugly!

'Pretty' is as 'pretty' does. Next time, ask them if they are looking to breed a show horse or a racehorse?

Strait Of Dover has very interesting breeding,on the dam side Rose Bowl won the 1975 Champion Stakes at Newmarket beating that great French mare Allez France and her dam Roseliere won the 1968 French Oaks beating that years winner of the French 1000 Guineas Pola Bella.I do not know if they intend to run Strait Of Dover in the Prince Of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie because of his poor record on dirt but given his fine turf pedigree I hope the 12 furlongs of the Breeders Stakes at Woodbine over that surface is in the plans.

Michelle: Ack! So it isn't bad enough that human models have to be 6' tall, weight 1 and 1/2 pounds and STILL get airbrushed. Maybe the "someone" wanted English Channel to get liposuction and a face lift.

(Wonder if the same "someone" would have passed by Dynaformer.)

p.s. I loved following the English Channels on the 2YO blog and I will continue to follow his runners -- especially as they get older. Looki

I'm glad to see English Channel coming up in the ranks. It's funny to me- I suggested him as a mate for someone who was looking for some "turfy" influence at a decent price and I got laughed at. Apparently he's not pretty enough!
