Cherokee Run has so far been broodmare sire of six stakes winners, none of them graded. It's not an exceptional performance, but it is interesting that there are already some marked trends.

Two of the stakes winners are by Lemon Drop Kid (I think they may be the only starters on the cross); two are by sons of Carson City (Five Star Day and City Zip), which gives inbreeding to Blushing Groom; another is by Freud (again inbreeding to Blushing Groom, and via Rahy). The other is by War Chant.

My feeling is that he is not a broodmare sire that I would be seeking, but that if I had a nice broodmare prospect by him, I would not be dismayed. It also looks as if he is a horse who is likely to be particularly helped by the right mating.

We have a Cherokee Run daughter still racing, she is from a Seattle Slew dam. What is your opinion of Cherokee Run as a broodmare sire? She is correct and has a good race record though not stakes placed.

You would have to think that Princequillo would be a good influence, given how well he worked with Nasrullah (and that Nearco/Prince Rose is good in general), and the predominance of those strains in Kafwain.

Relaunch might be interesting. The Axe II turned out to be a very influential horse. More of his sire Mahmoud can't hurt with Nasrullah either.

Since I have Kafwain here at Hurstland this coming year, I appreciate your breeding insights. Due to the amount of Nasrullah and Nearco in Kafwain's pedigree, what do you think about adding more Princequillo on the dam side to balance the Nasrullah out?

Also, with Hatchet Man in the pedigree, what about bringing in Foggy Note through Relaunch as a balancing factor for The Axe II?

I find the Cherokee Run angle interesting, and was a fan of his when he was running. The torch is being passed to Lewis Michael, but I think that Grand Reward and Harlington will be fun to watch as well- since they are sons of Serena's Song. Thanks for the interesting article
