She won over easy company, restricted,never in open company as well documented on this blog. Therefore, her true potential has been sequestered. Not good for this ailing sport. Parading her around at a low end farm is a joke for this sport,and her race record should be remembered as get straight A's at a community college.

Any one who has a race horse knows that winning one in-a-row can be difficult. Only 4% of racehorses ever break the $100,000 earnings mark -regardless of the number of races entered. What we have is humble owners who kept the mare close enough watch her run - who cared enough not to trailer her all over chasing $ and prestige - who picked a trainer who cared more about keeping their horse sound - who honored the home-state fans by keeping their good horse running there AND retired the mare sound rather than running her until she began going down in class. I celebrate these owners in it for the love of the horse and enjoyment of the sport. Horse racing needs more just like them.

I'll take Peppers Pride anytime. As a Breeder/Owner/Trainer It is a long hard haul from beginning to end. Anybody that says different is nuts. The team and hours and money that it costs is by no means cheap. Peppers Pride is a great racehorse and deserves the best. Shame on anyone for saying different and knocking her. That is petty jealousy. Rechelle by you saying what you did it shows any horseman of your ignorance. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Just remember.. The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it. Peppers Pride is a great racehorse and her being a mare makes it all the more special. Takes alot to get the the winners circle and alot more to stay there.

I love Carlsbad's emergence on the heels of Pepper's Pride's retirement (can't wait to see her Tiznow foal next year). Yes she's done what PP's never done, but that doesn't diminish what either one of them has accomplished - they are humbly bred and owned, and have been undefeated and dominant. What more can you ask for? Who cares about commercial appeal and level of competition. Aren't they the stuff dreams are made of?

I wish nothing but the best for Carlsbad and her connections. To her health and to the victories coming her way!

Peppers Pride was amazing. Her accomplishments are what every owner, trainer and jockey are hoping for. If it was easy to win 19 a row in New Mexico then we'd see it all the time. When I first saw some pictures of her I was blown away! She is a beautiful, strong, powerful looking mare and I am looking forward with great anticipation to her Tiznow foal.

I see your points however I must disagree. As an small-time owner in a past life, I can tell you I was running at the lower-end of spectrum. Regardless, you want to place your horse in races they will win (Ok, there may be other vaid reasons but just go with me). We did, and many times our horse actually loked much the best...and sometimes he lost. Now how is it that a horse placed in a race in which he is much the best could lose. Because winning is NEVER a forgone conclusion. There is only one way to win in racing but a thousand ways to lose. To win 19 in a row is a tremendous accomplishment. If it was easy, if it was as simple as always running at the same track, never running in the mud, or running against soft competition (which for PP I'd argue was not always the case) don't you think we would have seen the record broken a long time ago. I'd bet my house that if you asked any experienced owner, trainer or jockey, they would express that 19 in a row is in no way shape or form a disgrace.

PP is a very, very good mare. As an echo, 19 straight ain't easy, no matter where you're running. And I applaud Carlsbad's win. As Colorado doesn't have much in the way of horse tracks, I will route for and support any southwestern runner that hits the headlines. I am currently asking, through the NM Horsemen's Association newsletter, that a blog site, ala the Barbaro brothers, be set up for PP so we can keep track of her youngsters once they start arriving. It would be great to do that with Carlsbad, too. The Southwest is NOT a black hole!

I love that horses like Peppers Pride and Carlsbad give hope to all of us involved at the "humble" levels of the game. You don't need to spend five figures on a stud fee to get a quality runner. You just need to be smart in how you put together a pedigree. Both of these girls are total proof of that.

Hrseldy makes an equally good point about the care Pepper's Pride received. How many good horses were ruined by bad care? Too many to count, I'll wager.

I think the Peppers Pride thing is like records set by Division III college athletes. They get a lot of respect for being the best of their divisions, but the Division I records are still considered to be the "true" college records. So even though Nate Kmic has more career yards, college football fans still consider Ron Dayne to be the all time career rushing champion. And I think most horse racing fans still consider Citation and Cigar to share the win streak record.

Any undefeated horse is NOT a "humiliation". The fact that Peppers Pride wasn't by Storm Cat or some other big buck sire and out of Serena's Song or some other great mare, means nothing. What does count is that her trainer cared for her, kept her sound in mind and body, and she did something amazing. If you've never actually seen her picture, then you are missing a very well conformed race mare with good size and bone. I think the cross with Tiznow is a great choice and I for one, will be following this foal and any subsequent babies in the future. This is a great thing for the future of the sport.

I don't think anyone is taking a thing away from Peppers Pride's winning streak and how good a mare she is. How could they? A win is a win, and to string them together like she did is an accomplishment few have attained. But we'll never know for sure if she could have stomped on open company outside her home state because her connections didn't go that route.

I'm just commending Carlsbad's breeder/owner for taking a chance on "ruining" a perfect record. He could have kept her in AZ where she could have kept humiliating her competition, but he risked her getting her beat with a HUGE step up in class (TUP is in no way the same class as SA.) and he got the answers he sought. Yes, she's good eough.

I'm betting she'll get beat at some point, and even if she does, AZ has a horse that can hold its own in CA - and that hasn't happened since Radar Ahead in the day of Affirmed, that I know of.

It's obvious that at best,your running of a very limited level regarding racing. For what PP did and I could care less that she didn't run outside of New Mex is nothing short of brilliant! It's not embarassing that she broke the great Cigar's record,what is, that you would "slam" her for what she did accomplish. Like her trainer stated,"if 19-0 is so easy what can't everyone do it"? Do you have a clue how difficult it was keeping her sound to reel off nineteen in a row? Obviously not! You're way off,period!

I'll never knock any horse who goes 16 for 16 lifetime, no matter where they run.

I'm very interested in the Tiznow-Pepper's Pride cross and look forward to news of their foal next year.

BTW, the all-time record holder for most consecutive wins is Kinscem, also a mare. In the 19th Century she won all 54 of her races in five different countries between 1876 and 1879.

Honestly, I care very little that Pepper's Pride didn't step out of state-bred company. If it was that easy to win 19 in a row against state breds, then it wouldn't be a big story that she had done so. I hope Carlsbad continues to win. I imagine she is providing an incredible thrill to her breeders, and she certainly is a lovely advertisement for Arizona breds.

There was never any intention to compare the merits of Peppers Pride and Carlsbad, but it's a fact that Carlsbad did something that Peppers Pride never did, which is defeat open company in a graded stakes (for what it's worth, at the time of the "Great Peppers Pride Debate" I argued that she would have been very capable of winning a graded stakes).

Peppers Pride was a quality racehorse, but I wonder if she could have handled Carlsbad if they met. Carlsbad stepped WAY out of her comfort zone on Sunday, got headed for the first time in her life, battled back, and won with daylight in her first attempt at Graded Stakes company on a surface she's never run on before. She also missed the stakes record by an infintisimal fraction of a hundreth of a second. That is an accomplishment that should not be overlooked. It's easy to overlook Arizona breds, but not this one. Give credit where it's due.

Ditto. Peppers Pride won a lot of races. Whether she ran against state breds or open company, it's still a huge feat to win that many in a row without running into a bad day (feeling sick or otherwise) or running into bad luck during the course of the race.

Peppers Pride is a champion and she earned it wholly by herself. As Vince Lombardi once stated and oft times repeated, "On any given Sunday- - -" and you know the rest. Peppers Pride has not one single loss. Ran against all makes, shapes,models and gender and whacked'm all, I repeat, she never lost. I drove from Brownwood, TX to watch her last race. And i don't bet, i just love a winner, and she is a winner and her record stands by itself. I usually cheer for the grays first, then the fillies. So i will pray for a healthy foal from Tiznow and cheer for Stardom Bound next.
