Just an aside :- although there are a lot of mares today descending from Harry Whitney's mare Cresson (1916) it was unknown for any of the line -- which Americans lovingly term "blue collar"-- to have a runner in the Kentucky Derby.

In fact, the first one to do so, was the Canadian mare Mostly Sunny .. who had a son called Sunny's Halo, that actually won the race in 1983.

This year there is a second mare from this line.. Golden Works, who has a son due to run in the race..

overanalyze shows me he no fluke he won nice races both last year and this year. couldn't help noticing how straight and purposeful he ran down the stretch. this years derby will be won by veteran rider with the horse that has faced large fields. in 1984 i calculated an average horses beaten per race for each derby entrant and took the top three and the horses came out 1)swale 2)coax me chad 3)at the threshold. the race finished in that order. i only had the winner and missed a nice triple. this system doesn't work every year but it does help fill the triple some of the time. good luck!
