It's my understanding that quarter cracks can result from thin walls, often genetically caused, or by low heels (often due to inadequate care, or farrier induced), or by other confomational issues (? also genetically related). I plead guilty to not having Big Brown's hoof raised to inspect the issue of thin walls. He was being paraded outdoors when I viewed him, so I was reluctant to request this-not a sufficient excuse for not checking into this. I did, however, notice his slack pasterns, and saw this as a likely cause/effect of his quarter crack issues. Refrain neither has thin walls, nor slack pasterns, nor did Inlaw. Gold Seam did have thin walls, and I don't know whether thin walls are passed on dominantly or recessively. Should it be the latter (more likely), and if Big Brown's quarter cracks were potentially caused by thin walls, then I should have reason for concern...Appreciate your astute observation.
