You may say that Orb is arguably the best 3YO colt based upon his body of work so far but Verrazano is not far off and a win in the Haskel will make his case arguably as strong as Orb's since the Derby was kindof a funny race this year (meaning that Verrazano shouldn't lose too many marks for that off the board performance).

Horse Racing Terminology regards Off the board - as a horse that fails to finish in the money. This definition is very ambiguous. There is no specific dividend paid on a horse that finishes 4th. However, this horse does secure the 4th place portion of the purse and consequently dose not finish out of the money as it relates to the purses. In addition, the dividend paid for a superfactor includes the 4th place finisher.

When I specified that Orb finished on the board in all TCRs, he provided a return in the form of a dividend directly and in combination with others in all three races.

He returned a direct dividend in the WPS and contributed to the Tri & Super in the Derby; he contributed to the super dividend in the Preakness and the Show, Tri & Super dividend in the Belmont. He was therefore was not totally out of the money as it relate to dividend in all 3 races and therefore was not off the board based on the above Terminology..

The correct answer to the above question will put to rest the issue of on/off the board.

I feel obliged to advise you that because you consider hitting the board as one of the top 3 positions, does not make it so.

There are four positions that are displayed on the board i.e., 1st, 2nd ,3rd and 4th.

When a horse finishes off the board it means it finished either fifth or lower.

How often have you either read or heard the quote he/she was the chalk and did not hit the board? That quote does not restrict the board to the top 3.

There is an exotic wager known is an exotic wager known as the Superfactor. The horses that combine for this wager are displayed in order on the board as opposed to a high 5 that includes a horse that finishes off the board.

Based on your assessment of on the board all totes should be modified to reflect only first 3 places.

As usual I look forward to your informed response.

One Love!

As for Perfect Course, if he was good enough, I think he gets to the spot in time and runs on - in my opinion he wasn't, and thus, he didn't. I would normally defer judgment until after the Flow figure was in, but since PC was ahead of the eventual winner in the early stages of the race, the best I can do is give a neutral grade for his effort. This of course, reduces him to 'just a horse' status.
