The bell is rung 17 minutes to post. It was originally rung when there was no paddock and the horses were saddled under the trees all over the back of the clubhouse and grandstand, as a way to call the jockeys to their mounts. I'm pretty sure the bell is unique to Saratoga; there is no bell at Belmont or Aqueduct....

Dear Danielle: For a first-time family visit to Saratoga, you might want to consider these options:

Since it was the waters which first made Saratoga Springs famous, why not take in a bath in the bubbling waters? Call the Roosevelt Baths to book yours now.

At the Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, you can ride a mechanical racehorse, learn about the sport's greats and see film footage of Seabiscuit.

For a family-styled meal, try Augie's in Ballston Spa. Augie's serves delicious Italian food, and plenty of it, so you'll feed the whole family and have money left over for betting. Very crowded.

The adults in your group have to visit Siro's after the races. It's the only bar in the world with a racetrack in the backyard. Later, mosey over to the Horseshoe. Catch the Audiostars on Travers eve.

Danielle; there is so much to do besides the track. Parks, concerts, stores, restaurants, polo matches among other things.

I'm bummed I'll miss the jockey's annual fund raising event this year.

So looking forward to it. I miss everything about Saratoga!

Missing Saratoga for the first time in many years. Threw a shoe and broke a leg, still going to try Del Mar, live here. Love your take on everything. Heard there were a few changes, hope they didn't mess it up. Keep up the descriptive writing and with TVG etc. I'll feel like I'm there.

very excited for our family's upcoming saratoga trip! we are flying there for the weekend of the travers later in the meet. any cool things we should do or places we should visit while in town. we have never been there before!

why when I was a kid........

(isn't that how a lot of Saratoga stories start?)

We used to get up at dawn and watch the works, talk to the rich and poor folks alike along the rail (at 5:30 am, people are people!), sit in the Governor's box and drink coffee, and then go back to bed until the first race.

Compared with the cost of a lot of places in Saratoga during the meet, $7 for Hattie's chicken (and it IS good chicken) isn't too bad.
