I was a clubhouse guy for many years. I also loved watching races from the backstretch until the NYRA clamped down on backstretch visitors a few years ago.

But there really is something about the backyard as you found out yesterday. The whole track can walk by you within two hours, but nobody knows I'm sitting right there at my picnic table. It's very peaceful for me since I have a 'local' following who always want to know who I like. I'm happy to share, but after a while I just need some peace.

In the backyard, I'm just another random face in the crowd, watching the world walk by and cashing tickets to boot. Ah, Saratoga.
