Note to Hardlyhatful: I just read the AP story about Steinbrenner's death and they had a one paragraph listing of his Derby "failures." His ownership of the Yankees would dwarf anything, but the press ignoring his racing interests shows that horse racing itself doesn't rate a mention in the press or the public. Sad, as I remember a story about George on the farm, and he spoke (basically)about the Yankees being a business while the horses were a pleasure. I recall after a Redskins Superbowl win, when asked how it could be topped, the late Jack Kent Cooke replied a "win" in the Kentucky Derby. I believe it left the 1980's sporting press speechless.

It's also true that "The Boss" gave several people their starts in the thoroughbred industry. I guess if you could please him, you would be able to get the job done.

I'm sure he and his influence will be missed by many in both the baseball world and the thoroughbred world. I just have to say, I can't believe in both the national news and my local news their have been many reports on his deaths and not a single one mention that he was involved in horses racing, it's all about Yankees one would think with all he has done they would mention more than that.
