Has it been a good sale to this point, or a bad one? Where’s the bloodstock market headed

re: Fair-to-Good - By Evan Hammonds

The last line of your column made me "wince', as you state:

"While stallion owners wince at the continued trend in fewer breedings, basic Economics 101 says the reduction of product should increase demand, which hopefully will reduce the number of winces this time a year from now."

Looks like someone wasn't paying attention in that Economics 101 class. A drop in supply, or a "reducton in product" as is stated, certainly does not increase demand. A drop in supply results in an increase in price, which actually the reduces the "quantity demanded". The rise in price is the result of a fall in supply, not the result of an increase in demand.

An honest mistake I am sure and the type of mistake that occurs unfortunately all too frequently, including in the financial press. So no need to feel too bad -- though it doesn't necessarily make me want to run out and subscribe to Market Watch. :)
