Hi Evan,

Interesting article, not sure I have digested it properly even after reading it twice. It seems that the benefit of these changes go to the tracks...meaning money. I don't understand how these changes benefit the horses and their conditioning. I would think that increasing the number of long and short sprints earlier on would enhance their conditioning and bring them along more soundly as they are still developing at three.

Please illuminate as to how these changes are beneficial to the horses.

Casino inflated purses in certain jurisdictions speak to why determining the KD field strictly on earnings is unfair. A Grade 3 win for a large purse (such as Gotham, Delta Jackpot) could be weighted heavier than a higher class win at tracks without casino subsidies (such as Santa Anita). A point system based on race grade would be more equitable for determining KD entrants.

Good article, just the other day I was commenting on the fact that all the ownership and business interests,which includes trainers and jockeys always say racing needs stars.Well horseplayers IMO need more series for 3yos with full fields than the triple crown.

The Sham was moved in 2011 to January, replacing the San Rafael, which had always been run at a mile. The Sham was run last year at 1m & 1/16th, flip-flopping distances with the R.B. Lewis, which last year was run at a 1m & 1/8th. Both were cut back a 1/16th of a mile this year.
