Originally, the idea was to have a race with a big enough purse that Triple Crown race winning 3yos would stay in training until fall, rather than retiring after the big win. And stay in training another year, if they failed. Other races were added to increase nominations from stud-masters whose stallions weren't likely to sire a 10f horse. Turf races added because so many US breeders were breeding for the European market in those days. And so on.

And it has failed. Glamor 3yos are still retiring in the summer or before after injuries that they could come back and race after healing. Mega books mean that NO purse can compete with 150 times a $50K stud fee except maybe the World Cup.

The 'World Championships' phrase to the title was a desperate try to gain more attention from the sports media in general. And it happened at about the same time that the BC ended the sweetheart deal with the EBF, which depressed the number of European participants. Pitiful.
