I think Caleb's Posse could have nailed Horse of the year with a win in either the Cigar Mile or the Malibu Stakes. I can't figure out why they wouldn't go for it.

I hope to see Caleb's Posse run again this year....heis very exciting to watch and I picked him in the BC Mile.

Nice story, Jason! Caleb's Posse has brought "sudden" recognition to Donnie Von Hemel as you said; but I will remember him as the trainer of Mariah's Storm, who stunned Serena's Song on Kentucky Cup day in 1995. Perhaps he now has an Eclipse award winner in this 3-year-old colt.

Thanks Jason for the article on Caleb's Posse's Trainer, Mr. Von Hemel. Training runs naturally in his lines for sure. I know his father is a proud one.

I mentioned in a blog i loved watching Caleb's Posse "come from nowhere" to win his race. One of the highlights for me of the BC races.

Clevor Trevor is already 25??? seems like he was just on the scene. The Slewacide branch of Seattle Slew's lineage suffered because the better horses, such as Clevor Trevor, were gelded. Slewacide, himself, had great potential on the track but was injured in his only race and that was it for him. Anyhow, great to read about Donnie. Great trainer.

Thanks Jason for this article. Congrats to Donnie and the connections of Caleb's Posse. Yes, your comment that Donnie is as "humble as the day is long" is right on. When he brought CP to the Ohio Derby, his humility and gratitude showed through at the press conference. He was so thankful!

Good luck Donnie, looking forward to what CP can do next year.

Donnie is a good guy, humble and easy to root for. I loved Caleb's Posse in the B.C., and, IMO, he is the 3 year old of the year.

I hope Donnie has many more top horses, and lots of good luck to his Dad and brother as well!!

donnie von hemel is a class act. i have watched him for years. he has the talent to reconize a special horse. & the patence to devolpe a young horses strong points. he will be around for a long time, kinda like me. an ole railbird.

The above was my impression of the man. Couldn't have been more happy for the connections of CP. A lady in CD box near me on BC day new the secret too. (sshhh, Mr. Von Hemel has another good one as well)
