Florida herd helped shape today’s medication rules

While to observers they may look like any other horses enjoying the day in a paddock near Gainesville, Fla., the eight horses currently in the University of Florida’s Performance Lab represent a program that has helped shape today’s racing regulations.

As the industry moves toward uniform medication rules that will allow 24 therapeutic medications while providing guidance on withdrawal times for each of these drugs, it owes gratitude to Thoroughbreds and other horses in the University of Florida’s Equine performance Lab.
