Maryland-Bred Fund sparks resurgence

The Maryland Thoroughbred breeding industry, already in steep decline, practically disintegrated when the financial crisis hit in 2008.

At Country Life Farm near Bel Air, brothers Josh and Mike Pons were more fortunate than most who watched as their livelihoods fell apart. The farm, founded by their grandfather Adolphe, who planned the mating that produced Man o’ War, had made the star stallion Malibu Moon and had retained a sizable portion in him once he moved on to greater glory in Kentucky in 2003.
