Special Edition - Lane's End Staff on Zenyatta's Pregnancy and Foal

When 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta produced a healthy colt by Bernardini at William S. Farish’s Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Ky., it marked another chapter in the storied career of the popular mare owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Moss.

Managing such a high profile broodmare is no easy task, and those responsible for the care of Zenyatta discussed the great mare’s pregnancy and delivery of the foal during a special edition of BloodHorse.com’s popular Talkin’ Horses podcast.

Joining Talkin’ Horses moderator Ron Mitchell and Blood-Horse magazine staff writer Esther Marr were Lane’s End manager Mike Cline and Charles Campbell and Donna Vowles, who manage the broodmare operation at the farm and were in charge of Zenyatta during her pregnancy.

The trio of Lane’s End professionals answered questions that included those submitted via Twitter, Facebook, and email about Zenyatta’s personality traits, daily schedule, and how she handled being in foal. They also offered insights into the new-born colt and the plans for him and Zenyatta over the next several weeks.

I got the pleasure of watching Zenyatta win the Ladies Breeders Cup race and then the following year winning the Classic against the boys.  Absolutely love her "dance". Would like to see the baby playing (running) with her in the paddock.  Question: Whom will they  breed Zenyatta back to this year?

Way to go Zenyatta!  Your are so blessed to have such a gorgeous baby and such wonderful owners and a great farm to live on.  This is the very best of what we love about the Thoroughbred world...excellence throughout all aspects.  This is quite the heart-warming story, and so wonderful that you have revealed to her fans her "kissy" personality, and how very much she is part of your family.  The business is so lucky to have owners like the Mosses, who share their extraordinary gift of Zenyatta will all of us.  Kudos, all, and many many thanks!

The Mosses exemplify what ALL Thoroughbred owners should be.  They've done such an excellent job managing Zenyatta's career and most importantly, making sure she is HAPPY.  There are so many neglected and forgotten runners out there; who could ever forget poor Ferdinand?  It's a pleasure to see this type of stewardship and even better that we got to share in so much as fans.

Thank you all for this wonderful gift of her brand new life with her foal.  She is truly a gift to us all.  She is a national treasure.  I think of the words "Pure Heart" written by William Nack about Secretariat.  She is pure of heart.

What wonderful, magical news ... we are all so grateful to Dottie and John, Jerry and Ann, Team Z, everyone at Lane's End and Barn 55 for all their loving care of our girl and her boy--and of us.  Just wondering:  Has Tasty foaled yet?  How is she doing?  Will she (and her foal) be "buddies" with Zenyatta (and hers) again?  Thank you so much for the updates we wait for eagerly each day.  We appreciate you so, so much.

It's very loving and passionate.  I only have one comment . . . take the halters off both of 'em.  Not necessary full time . . . is it?

Pursuant to the BLESSING from above and the championship style from Zanyatta caring for her baby colt, one must also give thanks the less fortunate. God blessed the racing world with the Thoroughbred breed. UNION RAGS will romp in the 137th Preakness Stakes and one day .. could have a LOVE affair with Queen Zanyatta.
