Visions of May

"Sometimes we gain more from defeat than victory."

For two days I have been watching replays of the Fountain of Youth, and each time, I come away thinking the same thing: Court Vision, despite finishing third, was the most impressive 3-year-old in the race.

Take nothing away from Cool Coal Man, who got a perfect stalking trip from Kent Desormeaux, or Elysium Fields, who showed tremendous determination, especially for a horse jumping from the maiden ranks into a graded stakes that supposedly had many of the top Derby contenders. Both of them proved that they are good enough to be in the hunt.

But watching Court Vision fall behind by more than 13 lengths at the half-mile pole and then rally the way he did, was more meaningful to me. It proved that the son of Gulch, while still with a lot of work to do, is here to stay. That is more than we can say about some of the others last weekend.

We all knew that Court Vision had the heart. We saw that in the Remsen, when he was trapped, banged, and bumped, somehow still managing to get up by a neck. That performance is why he went off as the 4-1 second choice in the Fountain of Youth.

But after being last in a talented field of 12, having to go 7-wide around the final turn, and lose by only about six lengths, was telling. He could have easily given up.

It reminded me of what Curlin did in last year’s Derby, when he made that late move to get third. It was a telling sign of things to come.

Also, don’t forget that Court Vision was coming off a three-month layoff, and was not sharpened for speed in this race. To have any shot against War Pass and some of the other burners, Bill Mott will have to get him to stay closer to the pace. He does not possess the blazing type of speed to win from that far back.

But this is an honest, tough horse who is a legitimate closer. Mott was happy with his performance, and although he did not say where he will send him next, is going to have him ready.

At this point in the game nobody knows who is going to win on May 3. There is too much time left. The only thing we can do is eliminate pretenders and look for signs from contenders.

Court Vision is a contender.

I wholeheartedly agree, This is Mott;s year. I just wanted to see something from him, and did. I am expecting the gavel going down in favor of court vision the 1st wk in May.

Our thoughts exactly, since we bet on him to win. I'm sure we'll see our original investment pay off down the road.Probably at Keeneland.

I was eagerly anticipating the return of Court Vision in the Ftn. of Youth. I have to say that I was disappointed with his connections, and not the horse, in the selection of a race at this distance with this caliber of competition after such a long layoff and the ride that Gomez gave him. How could he let the horse fall so far back with such slow fractions. Usually, with a very slow pace, horses are naturally closer, but that wasn't the case with Court Vision. He's a very intelligent animal with a big heart. He was following orders from his jockey. He's been closer to the pace in other races. Court Vision wants to win, that's obvious in his races. The trainer should enter him in races that he can win...it's so difficult to return to the races at that 1-1/8 mile distance. Many good horses falter under the circstances. He knows when he loses...and it's not good for his mind. I hope Mott looks for tracks with very long stretches in his future races. How about the LA Derby...there will be lots of speed and one of the longest stretches.

Appreciate Sandy's take on Court Vision's trip in the FOY-- he did indeed strike me as a smart horse who was following orders, regardless of how ill-advised. Maybe both Mott and Gomez confused and thought he was up on Mott's "other-other" horse--Majestic Warrior? :-) Jason is also correct, in my estimation: this is a horse with a big heart, a fighter-- the kind of horse you got to like in a field of 20 come the First Saturday in May.

I think the connections got exactly what they wanted out of Court Vision. At this point in the game, a victory is not the end-all, be-all.

Although, point well taken Sandy, a softer, shorter spot may have been more ideal.

Jason, happy to see your blog here. Best of luck.

While discussing the FOY, I happen to love the way that Elysium Fields was moving and cannot discount him. War Pass reminded me of Bernardini running in the Jim Dandy and Travers. Still I'm a sucker for any horse that can close like a bomb. Thus Pyro is my pick to win. That plus the fact that most people discount Shaun Bridgmohan should add to his price. Definitely cannot be overlooked in any box play.

Jason,

Right on about Court Vision. You know your horses...good observation

Bruce 26 Feb 2008 10:06 PM

Thanks for the insight.  I'll be heading down the Derby and need some local knowledge.

Z-Bass 27 Feb 2008 12:46 PM

Pyro and Court Vision are not catching War Pass. Just looking at him he has progressed at 3 nicely and is the best horse in the land. To win the derby you have to outrun your pedigree. It looks like he is certainly doing that. Look for him to go into Louisville on the first Saturday in May undefeated and win it by five!!!

To be the Man you have to beat the Man.

War Pass is my Pick for Derby 134!!

War Pass 27 Feb 2008 6:21 PM

Court Vision had a trip from hell in the REMSEN, but displayed toughness and determination in winning. He has ALREADY experienced in that race alone what many of these Derby hopefuls haven't, i.e. SEVERE bumping and shoving, COMPLTELY bottled up in traffic, most horses would have quit, but C.V bullied his way thru and closed relentlessly making up 4 lengths to win. He has shown grit and tenacity. The FOY was a perfect prep for Court Vision to start off the year. He wasnt expected to be fully cranked first time out,but the race served its purpose well. The horse ran very good and will progress forward, THATS what preps are designed to do. The big prize is 2 months still two months away and i dont know if Court Vision will have one more or two more preps, but, barring any injury, one thing im confident about is Bill Mott will have this horse primed for its best effort on Derby Day.

Great Blog. Good insight. Court Vision showed his toughness. However, War Pass looked so tough winning with ease this month and looks like a contender.

DUMP 29 Feb 2008 8:45 AM

Jason - your analysis is spot on, as usual. Not really on point, but curious about your thoughts regarding the future of horse racing in the Northeast (NYC, Boston, etc.).  Chance of a resurgence???

Virus 29 Feb 2008 10:10 AM

Virus: New York racing, despite its troubles with management, is still among the nation's elite. It will always remain that way.

As for Boston, I believe that we will see a big resurgence in the coming years. They have new leadership that is committed to improving racing. I think you will see, in the next couple years, Suffolk Downs start to become a major player in the industry.

jshandler 29 Feb 2008 11:42 AM

Court Vision ran an excellent race in his first start back and is certainly a Derby contender. However, I believe Elysium Fields is the one to watch (and beat) after his FOY performance. Kent D got the jump nearing the top of the stretch with Cool Coal Man, while Eibar Coa wasn't quick enough pulling the trigger with Elysium Fields. Even so, Elysium Fields fought back and proved his toughness, which should serve him well on the Triple Crown trail.

Nailhead 29 Feb 2008 5:03 PM

Never have we had a mention of Bill Mott during the Triple Crown in ages, if at all.  Remember that Barclay Tagg was an unknown nationally before Funny Cide hit the scene (and Tagg was damn good at what he did prior to FC running).  Mott has trained champs before so he knows how to create and coddle a winner.  Don't underestimate him.  Especially with the the owners now who have some coin that provide him with the young stock he has.

Brs? 01 Mar 2008 12:43 AM

War Pass looked impressive, but ran against absolutely nothing in his paid workout. To me the jury`s out on whether he has any staying power when challenged on the front end.(Another Commentator?) If the derby were run today I`d likely leave him out of my exotics. He may change my mind with his next prep, but not right now. As for the FOY, Court Vision and Elysium Fields are the only two I think can go on. The winner looked exhausted after the race in whatever time it was run.

Smittytoo 03 Mar 2008 12:57 PM

Oh please,Court Vision has beaten a bunch of plodders (like himself),keep in mind Cool Coal Man is still improving, has an excellent record & a great turn-of-foot speed. Plodders do not win Derbies..(Giacomo got lucky!!)

Slew.em.All 04 Mar 2008 3:19 PM

I've been on War Pass's bandwagon since before he won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and I'm in his corner all the way; but at the same time, I certainly respect the other horses, especially Court Vision. Like the gentleman said, Court Vision is a "contender." When you have a horse that works that hard, gets knocked around, or starts well out of it, then digs in and closes like he does, it's like watching a prizefighter get hit in the face several times or even knocked down, then get right back up and come at you; and keep coming. If you're facing an opponent like that, you're in trouble. Court Vision is and will continue to be that kind of opponent.

Johnny 07 Mar 2008 12:48 AM

After taking another look at Court Vision in the FOY, he really should have been able to make up some ground in the stretch  against a horse catching asthma. He needs to step it up in his next for me to include him in my derby day bets.
