Awards, stakes programs benefit owners of Cal-breds

As far as the racing community is concerned, California is considered an island—far enough removed geographically from other major jurisdictions that it is left to fend for itself. Despite a bonus program instituted by Del Mar for those that ship into the Golden State to run, California remains largely self-reliant when it comes to filling fields. Just as significantly, California is an island when it comes to trying to maintain top-shelf racing without the benefit of casino money. It is the only major racing circuit that receives not a dime from the spinning of some sort of slot machine, video lottery terminal, or table game.
