CYNTHIA MCGINNES LOVES a good history lesson. The co-owner of Thornmar Farm cannot speak about the mark she and her husband, Charles, have made on the Mid-Atlantic circuit without providing suitable background information regarding all parties involved. Yes, their opera-tion is one of enduring stalwarts of the Maryland breeding ranks—successfully blending horsemanship, diligence, and sentimentality for more than four decades. But if one wants to get to the root of what has driven the McGinneses to weather some of the industry’s economic free falls, to remain dedi-cated to their region when others fled to the slots-rich lure of neighboring jurisdictions, Cynthia McGinnes cites one of her favorite pieces of historical data.
