The Equine Academy at Lexington Catholic High School

Lexington, KY
- In the fall of 2012, Lexington Catholic High School will unveil the Equine Academy, a unique educational opportunity for students interested in learning all aspects of the horse industry. The program will be available to incoming freshmen.

The Equine Academy's primary academic component will be a four-year equine-related course curriculum. Additional off-campus college-level courses, mentorships and research programs will be offered through our partnerships with the UK College of Agriculture's Equine Initiative and Midway College's Equine Program.

Students will also experience an extracurricular program which will offer internships, events, seminars, field trips, job shadowing, service projects and special events coordinated through our partnerships with Georgetown College's Equine Scholars Program and Alltech.

Dr. Steve Angelucci, President of Lexington Catholic, said: "The Equine Academy at Lexington Catholic is the newest addition to our expanding selection of educationally relevant programs. Our goal is to inspire and nurture future leaders in the equine industry. As the only program of its kind in the nation, our students will enjoy unique access to the wealth of equine related resources available only in Central Kentucky."

Boyd Browning, President and CEO of Fasig-Tipton relates: "As someone who is heavily invested in the horse industry and cares deeply about developing our next generation of leaders, I am excited about this innovative new program. As a Lexington Catholic Board member and parent of a current student and three graduates, I am proud to see this program added to a great school."

Program Highlights:

- Yearly equine-related curriculum components
- Hands-on laboratories and practical application
- Group and individual service projects
- Relationship-building with equine professionals
- Mentorship and research opportunities
- Culminating senior project
Equine industry leaders around Central Kentucky have quickly and enthusiastically embraced this program, with many joining as partners in creating programming and experiences unlike any school in the country.

"Central Kentucky is home to some of the world's best in the equine industry-world-class breeders, equine lawyers, accountants, and vets to name just a few. The young people who participate in this program will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from those who set the standard for excellence worldwide. Keeneland is proud to be a part of this program and contribute to the next generation of industry leaders," stated Nick Nicholson, President and CEO, Keeneland Association.

"The Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders have supported various school programs over the years. The majority of our focus has been on elementary and middle school levels. When Dr. Angelucci discussed the possibility of a high school curriculum that included an equine focus, we were pleased, and supportive of this initiative. What better time than at the high school level to introduce our young people to these possibilities. We look forward to our association with this program." David Switzer, Executive Director, KTA/KTOB.

Lexington Catholic High School represents a long tradition of Catholic education in the Bluegrass Region. The school was formed in 1951 through the merger of two secondary schools, St. Catherine's Academy, founded in 1823, and Lexington Latin High, founded in 1924.

Lexington Catholic is one of Central Kentucky's premier secondary, faith-based, educational institutions and is located in the Horse Capital of the World. Ninety-nine percent of our graduates go on to college, and eighty-two percent are accepted to their first-choice college. With an enrollment of 805 students and an average class size of 22, Lexington Catholic teachers are able to instruct in a learning environment that continuously develops the Mind, Spirit and Body of all students.
