Dappled out and looking good, 1985 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Twilight Ridge still commands respect from the other horses at Manchester Farm near Lexington, Ky. Mares and yearlings in nearby paddocks raced to the fence as Twilight Ridge walked by.

At the age of 29, the pensioner by Cox’s Ridge is part of the “senior group” of Manchester mares yet maintains a youthful personality and maneuvers easily through her daily routine. While getting a bath, she will drink from the hose. She likes to scrunch up her nose and move it side to side.

Are you sure she's 29?? She looks wonderful! I love the picture where she's playing with the hose, such bright eyes. She looks like she'll live another 10 at least! Thanks so much for sharing.

My thinking is that horses that are well maintained and cared for as many of the industries name animals are, just don't show their age. She looks very happy and cared about. Wondering at what age do the mares get retired from the breeding shed?

What a racemare Lakeway was. Since 1972 only she and Secretariat ran 1 1/8 mile Grade-1 races twice in under 1:47?

Great article, and awesome to see Lakeway - one of my all time favorites...

Can't wait for the editorial feature.

I was a huge fan of Lakeway!! I was 16 years old and was at Santa Anita when she won the Santa Anita Oaks. She was a fast filly!

Really classy mare, many thanks for the pics. I just bred my Sp. Bid mare to  Cox's Ridge stallion, Eltish, who looks so much like this mare it's scary. Hoping for similar results with my foal!

most mares get retired anywhere from age 20 to no later than 26, but normally it's 22 to 24 yrs old when their retired.
