So Vallenzeri keeps his name, huh?

FSF 22 May 2009 12:42 PM

I'm a little bummed that they renamed Cup o'Joe.  I thought it was a cute name, and Al Zir is a little unmemorable.  Oh well, I loved his gorgeous pic from the auction, and I don't think a name change will alter his beauty.

Heather 22 May 2009 12:48 PM

Hockley is a future Saratoga winner.

Phil Za 22 May 2009 1:05 PM

I know this filly is not a juvenile, and she certainly will never see the likes of an auction ring, but I've been dying to throw a name out there for the new daughter of Rags To Riches.

This little girl looks so much like her mother, mostly because of her rich chestnut color and that remarkable stamping of Rags' white blaze, including the quirky little point that touches the corner of her left eye.  I think, just because of the unreal resemblance to her mother, I would forego any reference to Giant's Causeway in this case and just simply name this beautiful filly......

REFLECTED RICHES

Paseana 22 May 2009 1:27 PM

My mom came up with one for a Rags to Riches foal....Pocket Change...I like it...or the name (if it isn't taken) New Money.....

Kayte 22 May 2009 2:52 PM

I like Hurri Now for the Tiznow-Hurricane Judy. Obvious, I know, but I still like it

Tiznowbaby 22 May 2009 4:27 PM

Mr Charlie, c., by Indian Charlie - Bally Storm, by Summer Squall. Purchased by Kaleem S. Shah.

"Squaw Line"

aspradling 22 May 2009 4:46 PM

Paseana, you are right on the money.  I think it's marvelous that the filly really looks like her famous mother.  Just goes to show that Giant's Causeway isn't going to have a lot of influence here!  Rags really stamped her foal.  The stallions get all the hype but the dams make the foals.

Dianne 22 May 2009 4:52 PM

With all due respect to Giant's Causeway, Have you looked at him ? I have never seen a bad photo of this horse. He is a spectacular looking chestnut stallion with a great big white blaze and white socks...That being said, Rag's filly looks a lot like her sire too.

mdfanofracing 22 May 2009 5:40 PM

Giant's Causeway is a chestnut too, so the foal with Rags to Riches is guaranteed to be chestnut. Chestnut is recessive, so the foal of two chestnuts will always be chestnut. The stallion and mare have equal influence on the foal.

As there is always hurricane season in Florida how about Tiz Florida for the unnamed colt by Tiznow-Hurricane Judy.

John T. 22 May 2009 8:40 PM

Giants Causeway was petty flashy marked himself:  a broad blaze and high stockings on both left legs.  So Rags shouldn't get all the credit for the coat color and chrome.

That said, I was sad to see "Cup o'Joe" tossed aside.  The good news is that it is still available.  I'd wager a Medaglia colt will likely be named that very soon.

My nomination for the Tiznow x Hurricane Judy colt is TIZ CAIN.

Lmaris 22 May 2009 9:27 PM

Paseana,

How about just "Reflections"?

Melanie

Melanie 22 May 2009 10:29 PM

Paseana - yes, spot on with your suggestion of Reflected Riches for Rags' first filly that looks so much like her.  Hope her connections read this blog.

tana rae 23 May 2009 1:40 AM

I agree Cup o'Joe was so much better than Alzir. I liked the suggestion of Reflected Riches for Rag's filly.

rowner 23 May 2009 8:00 AM

Paseana, excellent name choice

Dianne, amen to that

sweet terchi 23 May 2009 4:45 PM

According to www.pedigreequery.com (a thoroughbred pedigree database) there is a 2008 filly by Statue of Liberty out of Armagh named RUFFIAN!  Is that possible?  I know you can recycle names after a certain number of years, but isn't the name Ruffian retired?

Kelly C. 24 May 2009 5:16 PM

Rumbling, c., Unbridled's Song - Rubywood, by Woodman. Purchased by John Ferguson for $1 million

"Unbridled's Gem"

belmont_boy 24 May 2009 8:32 PM

For the unnamed Distorted Humor - Ile de France colt: A Certain Smile (from the novel by French writer Francoise Sagan).

Soldier Course 25 May 2009 7:26 AM

I like "Tizz The Cat" for Tiznow-Hurricane Judy-Storm Cat

horse 25 May 2009 7:55 AM

Name for Rags' filly should be "Because I am Rich"...suits her looks & attitude perfectly!

Laura 25 May 2009 2:21 PM

Why does every Indian Charlie foal have to have the word "Charlie" in it.

Joey 25 May 2009 7:30 PM

@Kelly C.

According to equineline.com, Armagh doesn't even HAVE a 2008 foal.  I always double check on equineline when something on pedigreequery looks suspicious, because pedigreequery is like Wikipedia, anyone can add info.  A while back someone added a few foals to Mien's progeny list that were completely inaccurate.

Heather 25 May 2009 9:46 PM

Kelly C., I for one am surprised. I was under the impression that names of notable horses could not be used again. They could be used in a variation, but not exactly the same. That's why we never see another Nashua, Twilight Tear, Secretariat, etc. etc. So I also ask how this is possible. Not to take anything away from the filly, but I am offended.I shouldn't be after all these years, but Ruffian was my first love. I still have the sports page of that fateful day.

sweet terchi 25 May 2009 9:55 PM

Too bad the dam of Affirmed, Won't Tell You, is gone.  I would have named two of her foals Don't Ask Me & I Can't Say.

Secret Stuff 25 May 2009 10:00 PM

I like Pirate Queen because my distance great++++... grandmother was an Irish pirate. No, really. :)

Gun Rock? Is he going to shoot people with pebbles? Heh heh.

MtBFan 26 May 2009 12:59 AM

Kelly C., thanks it's been taken care of.  You're right, Ruffian is permanently locked in the Jockey Club name database.  It didn't stop someone trying to name a foreign horse Citation awhile back.  I believe they were pressed to go something else but technically didn't have to since it was a country that didn't recognize our 'permanent' designation.  Possibly New Zealand but wouldn't swear by it.

I hope Vallenzeri keeps the name, unless they come up with a zinger.  Baffert suggested they'd change it but given his track record, I'd just as soon not.  Plus Vallenzeri looks and sounds good.  It's a tribute to Azeri and Allen Paulson.  Baffert wanted to change Silver Charm's name to Poker for a Buck (And yes, it's the double entendre you think it is.  I'm not sure if he was yanking Mr. Lewis' chain but the response was something like 'I don't think Beverly would go for that, Bob').  I'm not sure he could've gotten it through the JC anyway but I'm gonna lay money on that being a legit story if Isitingood, Icecoldbeeratreds, and Danthebluegrassman are any indication.

Kate 26 May 2009 3:45 AM

Here is a juvenile for everyone to keep an eye out for. He is currently in training at Cardinal Hill. His name is WHITE THUNDER. I just love that name!!! He is super quick, too. Not sure who his owners are, but I was told by his trainer that he is heading to Saratoga soon. Keep an eye out for him!!! He is sure to make noise at Saratoga this summer!!!

Horse N' Rider 26 May 2009 5:23 PM

To everyone is saying that Little Rags got a lot of her looks from Giant's Causeway and that you can't say she got all of it from Rags to Riches, you're mostly wrong. Sure, his markings and color contributed to how Little Rags looks, but the filly looks JUST like her dam. Giant's Causeway is more of a liver chestnut than a reddish-colored chestnut, and his blaze is not as wide as Rags to Riches's.

BTW 05 Jun 2009 1:39 PM

When are they foing to name rags to riches foal? please when it is will someone publish it
