Call for Broodmare of the Year Nominations

The editors of The Blood-Horse MarketWatch once again are preparing for our annual Broodmare of the Year special report. We've been poring over our notes about a handful of mares that produced 2011's top runners. (A huge data file that we pull each year also brings to light several dams whose accomplishments are worthy of notice.)

Every year we open the final polling to MarketWatch readers. That comes in mid-March, after the 10 finalists have been identified and profiled in the March issue of our publication. Last year we asked you to get involved in the process earlier by nominating mares to be included on our short list of candidates. It's that time again.

What Thoroughbred dam deserves to be Broodmare of the Year? Here are a few mares whose offspring had stellar campaigns last year--please voice your opinion on them or suggest a mare that didn't make it to this list.

Lot's of really nice mares on this list. Many young mares too with years left in their broodmare careers. My top three would be Oatsee, Magnificient Style and Ava knowsthecode. Ava Knowsthecode edges out the others because of her produce record.

In addition to those mentioned by Criminal Type, I would add Lady Shirl.

Easter Bunnette, Oatsee, and Champagne Glow.  Champagne Glow is getting on up there in years compared to most of these ladies.  The accomplishments of Havre de Grace, Shackleford, and Ruler on Ice are all pretty impressive.

I think it's Oatsee's time to be Broodmare of the Year. Out of her 7 runners, she has produced 5 that are black type, that have earned almost $4,000,000 collectively. Her graded stakes winners are Baghdaria (3xG3); Lady Joanne (G1-2-3); Afleeting Lady (2nd G2); Stephanoatsee (2nd SP in 4 starts); and of course, Shackleford, G1 and winner of the Preakness. Quite an accomplishment! Lady Shirl would be my second choice. Delta Princess will probably win the honors some day but at this point she has only produced one black type runner, albeit a top one, in Royal Delta.

Lady Shirl for her truly consistent body of work.
