A tad bummed Prized is so low on the list. He wins the BC Turf in his FIRST start on the lawn.

Cigar16 03 Nov 2009 2:54 PM

Absolutely Tiznow in 2001...after 9/11, all his physical & mental problems that year, becoming the first and only 2x Breeders Cup Classic winner...those blazing eyes, that will to win, the physical presence that is Tiznow...I have seen all the races you listed...obviously I love DaHoss...there is nothing that matches Tiznow's second classic...

da3hoss 03 Nov 2009 3:05 PM

Beside Tiznow's two wonderful victories, my personal favorite is tiny Pebbles bursting through on the hedge to take down the Turf.

Tiznowbaby 03 Nov 2009 3:08 PM

English Channel running away from Dylan Thomas and the field at 3 to 1 and bringing me home on my pick six.  What a sweet moment.

Charles 03 Nov 2009 3:12 PM

WHAT! No Miesque!!

SHE was the first to go back to back.

AMY ROONEY 03 Nov 2009 3:19 PM

Flanders and Serena's Song ding donging it the length of the stretch in the Juvenile Fillies should be on this list. Flanders won, broke a bone and never raced again. Everyone knows that

Serena went on to be one of the great fillies of all time.

Turnbackthealarm 03 Nov 2009 3:22 PM

There are so many but I will NEVER forget Personal Ensign, Arazi, or Miesque demolishing the field of excellent horses in 1988 mile. Storm Flag Flying also sticks out because she was beaten and starting dropping back, but then she refused to be beaten. With the tenacity of her grandma she rallied and stuck her head in front.

easy goer 03 Nov 2009 3:36 PM

What?  No Hollywood ending from the 1987 Breeders' Cup Classic?  An epic battle as "The two Derby winners HIT the wire together!!"  Shoe's first BC win.  Horse of the Year hanging on the balance of a photo.  For me, it will not be topped.

Foolish P 03 Nov 2009 3:42 PM

Tiznow's 01 win without a doubt. Goosebumps just thinking about it. The 1998 Classic was a "wild finish" as Tom Durkin put it, best field of all time.

Frank J. 03 Nov 2009 3:43 PM

The most emotional moment was near the end of the BC from hell in 1990...Go For Wand struggling to get up with her shattered leg to crawl to the Winners Circle, the only place she knew to go after a race...geez..

da3hoss 03 Nov 2009 3:45 PM

Lit De Justice, a gray blur down the stretch.

Rich 03 Nov 2009 3:48 PM

I would have to give Kudos to all of the horses that ran at Monmouth Park in 2007.  It was a deluge!!

Denise 03 Nov 2009 3:50 PM

THERE HAS BEEN NO RACE LIKE THE CLASSIC OF EASYGOER VS SUNDAY SILIENCE, THAT WAS EMOTION FOR TWO STRAIGHT MINUTES. THAT WAS,"RACING EPIC."

DANYLSON 03 Nov 2009 3:57 PM

Where's Ferdinand's 1987 Classic??  That ranks #2 for me behind Personal Ensign's Distaff...

kyrailbird 03 Nov 2009 4:00 PM

Skip Away in the 1997 Classic is one of my favorites.  Total domination almost the whole way.  He was an in-and-out horse but very good when he ran best race.

FourCats 03 Nov 2009 4:03 PM

I'm EXTREMELY disappointed that Tiznow isn't on the list...or Miesque...or Serena's Song vs. Flanders....or Storm Flag Flying....this list really shoulda been the top 15 or 20, lol.

Bailey 03 Nov 2009 4:11 PM

Tiznow's two Classic victories were unforgettable...but Personal Ensign's victory in the 88 Distaff still brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it...

Anita 03 Nov 2009 4:26 PM

The stretch duel between Cherokee Run and Soviet Problem was definately one of the best finishes in the Cup. As well as the victory of Precisionist in the Sprint. A truly tough race to win deserves at least one nod on the list.

Tiznow the best 03 Nov 2009 4:27 PM

Arazi's brilliant victory in the Juvenile was one of the most amazing performances we will ever see. Don't forget that he broke from the 14 post in his win, and his spectacular dash past a stunned Bertrando won't soon be forgotten. Tom Durkin's great call of "and Arazi runs right by him!" added to the moment. Arazi was, indeed, a superstar, at least on that sunny November day at Churchill Downs.

Dutch 03 Nov 2009 4:55 PM

My Flag and Storm Flag Flying are the ones I play on youtube all the time.

Saratogadew 03 Nov 2009 5:00 PM

Without a doubt, Personal Ensign... and I got to see it "live"....

Pat 03 Nov 2009 5:16 PM

the best is seeing Zenyatta last year in Cal. the worst was no question the break down of Go For Wand. Probably racings worst moment besides Eight Belles.

girls still rule!

fishfarm 03 Nov 2009 5:25 PM

My BC memorable moment was not from a horse, but from some fans.  In '06, my son and I had seats at the 8th pole, 2nd level outside grandstand.  For every turf race, there were 3 guys from Ireland, dressed in black suits, who came downstairs to our section to cheer on the European challengers outdoors, up close and personal.  After Ouija Board's scintillating repeat performance in the F&M Turf, these 3 "lads" raised their arms above their heads in V's for victory and led the entire section in a joyous victory chant, "Ouija, Ouija, Ouija... "  I still get goosebumps!

texohky 03 Nov 2009 5:25 PM

Turnbackthealarn,

Good call on the Flanders/Serena's Song battle. I've never seen two horses hook up right from the start to the finish like that. I still can't believe Flanders came back.

I'm sure they could only put so many races on here to vote from. 87' @ Hollywood was awesome. Theatrical/Trempolino, Ferdinand/Alysheba. I was torn between Arazi, Personal Ensign, Wild Again & Sunday Silence. Arazi made the most amazing move in BC history, but even with that it was hard for me to place him first. Personal Ensign's Distaff was a great race. But its tough for me to put that atop the race of the decade and the very first BC. In which the latter I put #1. Wild Again set some torrid fractions and still held on, while getting bumped by the massive Slew O'Gold and Gate Dancer. The owner supplementing $360,000 on a 30-1 longshot and he comes out a winner. This race started the BC Legacy.

The Rock 03 Nov 2009 5:39 PM

I am a little freaked!

My top choice (Personal Ensign) and my bottom five actually exactly match the community rankings!

Elaine 03 Nov 2009 5:43 PM

Street Sense's win in the '06 Juvy beautifully foreshadowed his '07 win in the Kentucky Derby.

Breathtaking moves both of them....practically last to first under the brilliant race riding of Calvin Bo-rail.    That's HORSE RACING.

philco ford 03 Nov 2009 5:52 PM

What happened to Arcangues Classic? That ranks pretty high with me!

Wanderlust 03 Nov 2009 5:56 PM

Personal Ensign looked hopelessly beaten at the 1/8th pole.  It was a cold and blustery day at Churchill that day but she electrified the racing world with a true performance for the ages.  Randy Romero looked almost as stunned as everyone in the crowd when she exploded in that final 1/8th to collar Winning Colors.  Truly the Greatest Performance I have ever seen in over 20 years in this business!

Sean B 03 Nov 2009 6:00 PM

Every time I watch the 2001 NBC broadcast of the Breeders Cup I get teary eyed.

They showed an interview with Tiznow's trainer (Jay Robbins), and he was talking about Cecilia Straubs struggle in her battle against cancer; she died 3 days after Tiznow's first win the BCC; he said her last words to him were..."Take care of my baby" referring to Tiznow...There were about 5-6 of us watching, and nobody could hold their tears back...

The whole group was rooting for him, and after he looks beaten at the top of the stretch, he rallies to defeat a great horse like Sakhee...We went wild!!!

My favorite B-Cup moment of all time!!!!

LEON 03 Nov 2009 6:01 PM

You can watch the 2001 broadcast, including Robbins interview at

www.youtube.com/watch

LEON 03 Nov 2009 6:07 PM

What about Ghostzapper in 2004

Sgunne 03 Nov 2009 6:13 PM

Where is Tiznow?  The footage of his seond Classic was played in lockerooms across the country as inspiration to athletes (including that year's Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots)!  Personal Ensign from this list, but that is a heck of an omission!

Lil Darlin 03 Nov 2009 6:13 PM

The first breeder's cup i ever saw was in 2001 when Tiznow won his second classic. That will always be my favorite race

Meghan 03 Nov 2009 6:16 PM

One word  PEBBLES!

GeeGees 03 Nov 2009 6:24 PM

Totally agree with those saying Tiznow's 2001 Classic and the Flanders/Serena's Song Juvenile Fillies of 1994 should be on the list.

Karen in Texas 03 Nov 2009 6:40 PM

I'll never forget Skip Away. He won the 1997 Classic by six lengths and also set a record for the race of 1:59.16 which held until Ghostzapper in 2004 when he ran the 1 1/4 mile in 1:59.02.

ZJ 03 Nov 2009 6:56 PM

Go For Wand.  I was standing right there on the rail and it happened  in front of me. I threw my $20 Bayakoa win ticket on to the track.  It was like it was blood money.  While the most horrible thing I ever witnessed, it was memorable by definition...I am tearing up now. Bye.

Vale of Tears 03 Nov 2009 7:55 PM

Watching either of Tiznow's Classic wins always brings a few tears.

Can't explain it.

Peace

Virgil Fox 03 Nov 2009 8:03 PM

Ferdinand in the '87 classic when he nosed out Alysheba and Tom Durkin's unforgettable call.....AND THE TWO DERBY WINNERS HIT THE WIRE TOGETHER!

LAZMANNICK 03 Nov 2009 8:42 PM

How in the world did Tiznow NOT make that list???

"And Tiznow wins it for America!"

tiznow1 03 Nov 2009 9:20 PM

Why is Tiznow not on the list?

Karen in Indiana 03 Nov 2009 9:26 PM

"...Cat Thief, clawing his way to the lead..."  I threw out Cat Thief, he finished 3rd in his previous race (the Kentucky Cup Classic) and I couldn't figure out why Lukas would enter such an obvious speed type who would just fade again.  The horses I liked finished 2,3,4,5. Budroyal 25-1, Golden Missle 75-1, Chester House 60-1, Almutawakel 7-1.  That Cat Thief stole my huge tribox payoff.

cat thief 03 Nov 2009 9:54 PM

Can't argue with the lack of Tiznow, Flanders/Serena's Song, and Pebbles but where is Lure? His 1993 performance for his second BC Mile win was amazing!  With any kind of a decent post position in '94, he would have gone three for three!

The Student 03 Nov 2009 9:58 PM

First of all, thanks so much to HRTV for showing all the past BC races. I watched a few of them and there were so many exciting races. An important thing I noticed is how televising the races has changed...for the better.  I can't remember the horse's name, but she was a gray filly about to step onto the track for the juvenile filly race, and spooked, reared up,and hit her head on the steel barrier.  She then got her hoof caught in between the bars of a gate and couldn't get herself loose, and no one could help her. I kept cursing at the television to stop showing the horrific struggle but was glad to see that eventually she was sedated and vanned off. The broadcaster, Charlsie, was also pleading for the camera to focus on something else. They also had the camera on the owner who was visibly upset and crying. It was later said during the broadcast that the filly survived and was back in her stall; however, I did some research and read that she had died about a week later from the head injury. I just know today that broadcasting would not be that tacky.  On a lighter note, I think Goldikova's race last year was the most exciting race. She should be on this list.  What a game, gutty little filly. And, I can't wait to see her do it again this year!  Health, safety, and best of luck to the BC horses.

N.O.Lady 03 Nov 2009 10:23 PM

N.O.Lady - it was Exogenous in the 2001 Distaff - I remember it well because I got physically sick watching them try to deal with her.

Like you, I hope TV gets a grip and learns that we don't need to see the tragedy that can occur in this sport we love (I go back to Ruffian and Go For Wand).

Safe trips to everyone always -not just on "big" days!

Weekend Storm 04 Nov 2009 2:35 AM

I am sorry for you Cat Thief but I won a lot of money that day on him. I also thought Arcangues win was most memorable moment.

Rowner 04 Nov 2009 3:42 AM

To me, Curlin's exciting and large margin of win in 2007 was the most exciting to me as I have not seen all the Classics being relatively new to the Breeders Cup.  I hope this Friday and Saturday will provide the same kind of excitement the previous breeders cups have to many! Enjoy this weekend all!

CURLINLOVER 04 Nov 2009 8:03 AM

Personal Ensign's furious close with the unbeaten streak on the line was a thriller, Hey Jesse Champions race against Champions they don't take a vacation on Breeders cup day!Can Zenyatta do the same as PE against that great field she'll face?

The Phantom 04 Nov 2009 8:32 AM

Personal Ensign's win was heartstopping, but Cigar's win was so effortlessly dominating and was coupled with one of Durkin's all-time great calls.

But a top 10 list without Tiznow seems kind of meaningless to me.

LanceS 04 Nov 2009 9:39 AM

So many fond memories of BC and so many memories we will - as fans - never forget for a variety of other reasons!

Loved Alysheba and Easy Goer so those two will always be near the top for me.  Also Cigar's win in '95 was fabulous!  I am a tried and true Silver Charm fan so my fondest memory is of the '98 Classic when I was there at CD watching the best field ever assembled for hte BC, though SC did not win after a horrendous ride by Gary Stevens (and Frankie Dettori really).  Oh well - it was a fantastic field and a fantastic race!!!

Kelly E. 04 Nov 2009 10:36 AM

My most painful memory was 1984 Classic -- how could the stewards declare Wild Again the winner when he was clearly switching paths to block Slew o'Gold the whole length of the stretch?  Were they blind???? Yet, they punished Gate Dancer for doing the same thing.  What a crock!!!!  My absolute nail biter which ended in a dead heat was Johar and High Chaparal -- that was the all time thriller.

VegasVixen 04 Nov 2009 11:18 AM

I agree with DaHoss.  Tiznow's 2nd BCC is my favorite moment of all. To leave it off the list, especially since he's the only horse to ever win 2 BCC's makes the rest of the list pointless.

Where is Dajur/Safely Kept's 1990 sprint?  Dajur's shadow jumping cost him the race.

Lmaris 04 Nov 2009 11:25 AM

while its hard to narrow down 10 memorable races in the BC, there are a couple I would have posted instead.

1995 Juv Fillies with Flanders and Serena. I still to this day think Serena should have won.  Flanders leaned and bumped on Serena down the stretch which most likely cost her the race IMO.  Flanders should have been taken down but with her break down and both trained by Lukas....It was still a memorable race regardless of the winner. Serena was raced hard her whole career and never was as good in the BC after that due to her campaigns (6 G1 wins as a 3YO - 13 sts 9 wins after a 10 race 2YO season and no break no LASIX - talk about tough little mare! Sorry Rachel Alexandra)

1993 Lure's repeat in the Mile coming from the outside post 11, 5 wide into the turn, 22 and 45 splits destroying the track record in 132 certainly better than DaHoss

1995 Inside Information's "Colossal Victory" and well deserved 119 beyer was huge

2003 Johar/High Chaparrel Dead heat in G1

2001 Tiznow "wins it for America!"

A couple favs for me are 2000 Kona and 1999 Artax sprint victories. My EX on Thirty Slews-Meafera

Kotashaan-Bien Bien, Fraise-Sky Classic, Ouija Board and a couple on the list, Wild Again, Sunday Silence and Personal Ensign.  Alphy and Indy.

I look forward to more great memories this year.  May they all come home safe!

mararacing 04 Nov 2009 12:27 PM

There are two moments for me with the first being Alysheba in the 87 Classic as I stood at the rail and saw Alysheba put in his move and watched his saddle cloth waving as he burst past horses and heard the call "Alysheba is flying on the outside".

My other moment is the 99 Classic as I had told friends all week that Cat Thief was going to win it as he was due for a win. I had seen a pattern with his races so my gut told me he would win and then told my husband to get me a win ticket (which he did), an exacta ticket with Budroyale (which he didn't) and a trifecta ticket with Cat Thief, Budroyale and Golden Missle which he did but with Cat Thief, Budroyale and Lemon Drop Kid. Everybody laughed as I chased my husband around hitting him with the racing form for blowing my perfect Classic.

Julie L. 04 Nov 2009 1:38 PM

My favourite moment isn't even listed: Dance Smartly winning the Distaff the same year she won the Canadian Triple Crown and went undefeated that year.

She just doesn't get enough respect.

Terry 04 Nov 2009 1:38 PM

Tiznow's victory over Giants Causeway in 2000 as a 3 year old and his victory in 2001 over Sahkee and  Albert the Great (track specialist)at Belmont were the greatest performances in Breeders Cup history. In my opinion (Of Course)

go baby go 04 Nov 2009 2:05 PM

I put Personal Ensign at the top but only because of the two that Tiznow won, neither is on this list??? Talk about memorable! One of them could have replaced Zenyatta. Her race was a forgone conclusion. What about Unbridled and his move on the inside to burst away. I think it definitely garners attention.

slewed'em 04 Nov 2009 4:34 PM

Theatrical/Trempolino dueling the length of the stretch is a huge favorite, as is Durkin with the best call ever on the Ferdinand/Alysheba Classic. Both Tiznow wins were great, especially the second. The Johar/High Chaparral dead heat also deserves reognition. I realize we need to make a few concessions to newer racing fans, but Curlin in the slop doesn't begin to compare to the excitement these other performances generated.

dave 04 Nov 2009 7:49 PM

2001 in NY..............armed guards on the Belmont roof & around the winner's circle.  And then we heard Tom Durkin's call...."Tiznow wins one for America!"   That says it all

Affirmed4ever 04 Nov 2009 8:32 PM

Where's Miesque, and what about the great Lady's Secret. Come on ya'll, there were too many great ones to count! Rest in peace, Go For Wand, that was a day I like to forget......

Suzanne 04 Nov 2009 8:34 PM

I've enjoyed watching all of the Breeder's Cups, and can make a case for every race.  What I remember even more were the Horrific breakdowns: Go For Wand, Pine Island, George Washington to name a few.  I don't really have a favorite this year, just praying that everyone comes home safe and sound.

Robin 04 Nov 2009 8:54 PM

The Arc Winner and the American Horse of the Year hook up in the stretch ...

Heartpounding, desperate race.

Tiznow's 2001 moment is what the B.C. is all about.

oahunick 04 Nov 2009 11:09 PM

Tiz the season to remember the thrilling stretch duel between the ARC winner and america's best horse.

Tiznow and Sahkee was the most exciting race I've seen at the Breeders Cup. He also beat the hometown specialist Albert the Great.

go baby go 05 Nov 2009 2:15 PM

Affirmed forever says it all!!!!

go baby go 05 Nov 2009 2:18 PM

I feel Alysheba's win in 88 was for me the most memorable and personal. I ranked him as number one because of that. Cigar was a MD bred and one of the very best we've ever had. It's unfortunate that Tiznow is left off this list. Certainly him winning twice should have been here. All of us remember that.

Alli 05 Nov 2009 11:14 PM

1990, Unbridled splitting horses, forgotten in that race and forgotten in your list, shame on you.

robert the rug guy 06 Nov 2009 6:14 AM

Tiznow's back-to-back Classic wins should be included, but it was his second Classic victory that had me on my feet! What an amazing race!

Lauren 07 Nov 2009 2:24 PM

Now we can add the 2009 Classic to the list of "Breeder's Cup Greats." Zenyatta was magic. Having been at SA to see her win the distaff classic last year, I know the everlasting thrill of witnessing greatness. Today the ground and grandstands were vibrating before the race and must have been recorded on the Richter Scale after. WOW! Talk about girl power...

Grandefan 07 Nov 2009 9:28 PM

Tiznow deserves an apology. This is not the first time he has been short-changed.

Three years ago the book "Horse Racing's Top 100 Moments" named the advent of the Breeders' Cup as the #1 Moment. Where are Tiznow's back-to-back wins of the Breeders" Cup Classic honored?

In an "honorable mention" (#112), buried on the next-to-the-last page of the book. This was a disgrace.

Soldier Course 07 Nov 2009 10:40 PM

Zenyatta had a great moment and she is Horse of the Year...in California.  Rachael Alexandria is Horse of the Year for America.  She raced on numerous dirt tracks all over the country.  Zenyatta did her thing five times and only in California, and only on the kind of track she likes.  Everyone is caught up in her moment, which is fine.  I'm happy she won.  I was cheering for her all the way down the stretch, but that should not put her at the top over Rachael for the entire year.

Jon 09 Nov 2009 12:24 PM

Actually, the 87 Classic with Ferdinand and Alysheba was better than Alysheba's in 88.

Shocked Zenyatta isn't higher.  Did everybody MISS watching this race?

BonnieH 09 Nov 2009 4:51 PM

I think Zenyatta winning the 2009 Breeders Cup Classic against a group of powerhouse multiple Grade 1 winning males is the greatest Breeders Cup Classic certainly, and for me even eclipses Personal Ensigns run in the 1988 Distaff to beat Winning Colors. No horse racing fan will ever forget Zenyatta's performance in the 09' Classic.

John Horton, Jr. 10 Nov 2009 7:36 PM

It really is not fare to limit The Breeders Cup Greatest Moments to a ten of the best Moments.  I am sure racing fans will never come to a unarguable consensus, BECAUSE the BREEDER'S CUP has produced 100's of The Greatest Moments in Horse Racing.

Darren J Fish 16 Nov 2009 10:54 AM

We definitely need more than the top 10 moments. Heck I can think of 5 in this years Breeders Cup alone.
