This 'Soul' is going to the Derby

I am heading to the Kentucky Derby. This will not be my first trip to Churchill downs since I saw The Police world tour at the track, but it will be my first trip to the Derby, and I will be running around...a lot. The goal is to give you a recap of my experiences each evening on my blog. Whether that can happen, I am not sure yet, but do look out for that. I will be heading there Thursday and returning Sunday.

Hopefully this will engage those of you who can not attend the Derby and help you to become interested in going if you have never been.

This post is about updating you all about my previous post on following Perfect Soul first crop of 2-year-olds. I also will explain briefly a few other tid bits.

Update:

While around Keeneland this April, I was reminded that I needed to update a previous post. Many prominent freshman sires, including Smarty Jones and Saarland, had runners make their first start at Keeneland this April. They also had 2-year-olds go through the ring during Keenelands April sale. I have mentioned some of this in previous posts, but I have ventured out to Keeneland several times in the past few weeks to check out the races with some of these new starters.

So here is my update with following Perfect Soul's first crop of 2-year-olds.

If you have read my first post on how to follow a Sire's first crop, then you know I am following Perfect Soul. You can read here.

I wanted to give a brief update on to that post by providing all the named 2-year-olds and a list of works from several who are in training. Perfect Shower stands out the most for several reasons. For example, he is the most active in training according to DRF notices, and has four workouts that show steady, good improvement.

Synthetic surfaces seem to be his thing as he is currently trained at Keeneland. Almost Perfect, Rochella and River City Saint have each had one workout, but I think we will see more from Rochella, and River City Saint. It has been a while since Almost Perfect worked, but maybe they are just taking their time with him.

Almost Perfect: workouts
3/13/08 2 furlongs at :25.2

Perfect Shower: workouts
3/27/08 2 furlongs at 00:24.8
4/1/08 3 furlongs, all weather, :37.4
4/11/08 3 furlongs, all weather, :37.00, Keeneland
4/19/08 3 furlongs, all weather, :36.6, Keeneland

Rochella: workouts
4/1/08 2 furlongs, dirt, :26.4, fast track

River City Saint: workouts
4/11/08 3 furlongs, :39.0, fast track

If you have a question or topics you would like me to investigate, you've wondered, ask and maybe I can fulfill that wish. No promises, but I thought you would enjoy learning something about the horse industry and most likely I would be learning about that topic as well. You can submit an idea through my contact information or email.

Named Perfect Soul's, with green indicating training.

I went for the Breeder's Cup once and I really didn't like the layout all that much. Getting to the paddock and then back to the track is a pain, and impossible on Derby day, much less actually being able to see the race unless you've got $$$ seats.

I would like to hear about what it's like to ride a racehorse. Named Rich Al.
