The weekend photo contest exposed a few readers as true Turf historians -- not all of the pictures were easy but we had a couple of perfect responses. Good work Sharon, Ashley A., and iknowitall. By random draw, Ashley A. was selected as winner and will receive a $20 gift certificate to Blood-Horse Photo Store, which sponsored this contest.

1970 chestnut colt -- the last foal of his sire.
If you answered Secretariat, you were... WRONG! This is Cy's Last Sigh (pedigree), the last foal of his sire, the great Triple Crown winner Citation. Citation didn't achieve overwhelming success in the breeding shed, but had his share of good runners. Cy's Last Sigh was in the money 44 times from 102 starts from 1972 to 1979 (including 28 starts in 1973 at age 3, while Secretariat was having his legendary year). (Cy's Last Sigh, by the way, is from Thoroughbred family 4-c.) |

Twice-champion filly and dam of four stakes winners. From the Domino sire line.
"Twice-champion filly and dam of four stakes winners" convinced many that this must be Ta Wee (pedigree) -- but Ta Wee hailed from the Hastings/Man o'War line. Actually, this photo depicts the great racemare Alcibiades (pedigree), winner of the 1929 Debutante Stakes and the 1930 Kentucky Oaks. Her champion son Menow (pedigree) once stood at Beaumont Farm, where the Blood-Horse Building is now located, and has an ongoing sire line--through grandson Buckpasser--that includes Chapel Royal (SRO), Lite the Fuse (SRO), Montbrook (SRO), Thunderello (SRO) and others. |

New-for-2007 sire featured on the Dec. 16, 2006 issue of The Blood-Horse.
There were several exciting stallions that were "new for 2007." Back in December 2006, The Blood-Horse pictured 3-year-old champion Bernardini on the cover. (Bernardini, by the way, is from Thoroughbred family 4-m.) Buy this and other The Blood-Horse magazine covers at the Blood-Horse Photo Store. |

Shhh! He's sleeping.
This image inspired the most correct answers. Barbara Livingston caught Secretariat in repose at Claiborne Farm in this terrific shot, available at the Blood-Horse Photo Store. |
Thanks for taking part. Congratulations to all those who had one or more correct responses! We'll do this again next month.
