From the Families of Leading Sires A.P. Indy and Storm Cat

I ducked out of work this afternoon and drove the 2.2 miles to Keeneland for a bit of horse-watching.  There were two "Day Nine" hips that had caught my attention when I went through the catalog way back when it came out, and I wanted to see them.

  • Hip #3086 (catalog page) was a bay filly by Yes It's True (SRO).  Her third dam is Weekend Surprise, blue-hen dam of super-sire A.P. Indy (SRO).  Disappointing RNA at $70,000.
  • Hip #3180 (catalog page) was a dark bay/brown filly by El Corredor (SRO).  Her second dam is Terlingua, dam of Storm Cat (SRO).  Good value at $85,000.

As it turns out, I missed seeing the first filly, but I was impressed by the second.  Athletic and feminine -- just the way a Thoroughbred yearling filly ought to look.

It's neat to see fillies from the immediate family of today's top-tier sires.

Don't miss any of the results of the Keeneland September sale (or other big sales) -- check out the daily Auctions Data Digest on the BloodHorse.com home page for Thoroughbred sales previews and results.  (Here's the Day 9 edition of Keeneland September 2008.)

Also Hip 2145 a Holy Bull filly from Storm Cat's family

  • Scot's reply:  Hip #2145?  That's a Maria's Mon filly from a terrific family -- but I don't see the Holy Bull/Storm Cat connections.  I checked Holy Bull's fillies in the sale and am not sure which one you're referencing.

Here's another observation - Both Weekend Surprise and Terlingua are daughters of ...... Secretariat !

Scot....I think that a simple way to look at this is that the big boys,  AP Indy and Storm Cat, bring the big bucks.  But thier offsprings bloodlines bring the big value!

It seems that every time a big name AP Indy or Storm Cat Mare retires, she is rushed to the breeding shed of the other.  Statistically this has not been a great move.  Of 57 covers by AP Indy on a Storm Cat Mare..the top earner is $297K....not even enough to cover the stud fee....So much for the breeding the best to the best and hope for the best.  Also the 13 covers by Storm Cat of AP Indy mares has produced only one noted horse, Bluegrass Cat ($1.76M), the next highest earner is only $243K, again much less than the stud fee.

For two such great sires to only combine for 1 out of 70 offspring to become Million dollar earners seems to indicate that this cross might be a bit on the weak side....especially when the high stud fee's are considered!
