Broodmare Marathon -- Majestic Trail

It's no secret that Thoroughbred sales have seen a down market in 2008, and I expect that the autumn breeding stock season will experience a similar trend.  I plan to benefit from the situation by adding to my small broodmare herd this fall -- with the hope of obtaining, at a bargain, a mare that might otherwise be out of my modest price range.

The mixed sales would have to be a real blood bath, though, for me to have any chance at one of my favorite mares being offered at the Keeneland November sale.

Hip 1548 is the mare Majestic Trail (catalog page, pedigree), a daughter of Kris S out of the Danzig mare Personal Glory.  Take a look at her five-cross pedigree and what should jump out is that she's bred on the same cross as Dynaformer (SRO).  Specifically, Dynaformer is by Roberto out of the His Majesty mare Andover Way; Majestic Trail is by a son of Roberto out of a daughter of Andover Way.

Majestic Trail's dam, Personal Glory, is herself bred on a similar genetic pattern to the young Darley sire Offlee Wild (SRO).  Both are from the family of Andover Way (in Offlee Wild's case, through a Seattle Slew daughter), and both can claim as their grandsire a son of Nearctic out of a mare by Native Dancer -- which is just a convoluted way to say that Offlee Wild and Personal Glory descend from the close relatives Icecapade and Northern Dancer, respectively.

Some stats on Majestic Trail:

Hip #1548 (catalog page, pedigree), a 7-year-old mare named Majestic Trail, sells Fri., Nov. 7, 2008 (Book 3, Day 5) at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale
  • Thoroughbred female family:  4-r
  • Race record:  unraced
  • Produce record:
    • 2006 filly by Diesis (GB) -- unraced
    • 2008 filly by City Zip (SRO)
  • Covering sire:  Tale of the Cat (SRO).  2008 yearling average: $133,327 (median $98,500).  2008 stud fee:  $37,500.  This mating earns a solid TrueNicks A rating.

Anyone who's read this blog for any length of time will know where I'm leaning:  Purim (SRO).  In addition to just loving Richland Hills' new sire, I like the Purim-Majestic Trail cross because it would introduce an exciting sex-balanced Rasmussen Factor to Andover Way.  I don't shy away from the resulting 3 x 3 inbreeding because the individual horses are exceptionally high-quality. As a counterpoint, TrueNicks doesn't like the Roberto/Roberto cross that this mating would introduce.

Open to comments.  What do you think about her bloodlines?  Thoroughbred family 4-r?   Her similar breeding to Dynaformer and Offlee Wild?  Unraced mares in general?  Danzig as a broodmare sire?  The best potential crosses for Majestic Trail?
