Thoroughbred Horse Photos - Contest Results

The results are in and quite a few astute readers scored perfectly in this round of Name That Thoroughbred!

  • These first two images are from various collections at The Blood-Horse Building:.

When the contest started, the text next to REAL QUIET's image incorrectly asserted that he was Horse of the Year as a 3-year-old  In fact, Skip Away took that honor in 1998 -- Real Quiet was Kentucky Horse of the year and earned his Eclipse award as champion 3-year-old.  This painting is by Julie A. Wear.

I knew if I mentioned that coat spotting is often given his name, several responses would come back for Birdcatcher.  In fact, this is Birdcatcher's great-great-grandson, BEND OR, whose flecks and "Bend Or spots" were likely a genetic heritage from Birdcatcher..

Those markings must be distinctive -- most responses were correct that this is A.P. INDY.  The palm trees and mountains identify this as a California track -- and indeed this is Santa Anita.  The race was the grade II San Rafael Stakes in 1992.  (Photo available at the Blood-Horse Photo Store.)

You can hardly see him in this photo behind Mambo in Seattle -- but that's COLONEL JOHN winning the 2008 Travers (gr. I).  Most of you correctly named Point Given (SRO) and Hard Spun (SRO) as current sires who share Colonel John's broodmare sire, Turkoman -- but some of you named less-known (but still valid) sires!  (Photo available at the Blood-Horse Photo Store.)

Congratulations to all those who responded with one or more correct answers -- and especially to "Firebrand," who was randomly-selected from the "perfect" responses as the contest winner.

Stay tuned for another contest in a month or so -- and be warned, the next one will require some research!
