Five-Cross Mare Back at the Track

Five months after we started discussing the mare Surgeglobal (in a previous Five-Cross Files post and again in a follow-up post), the mare will compete in a Turfway Park contest today.  This start marks Surgeglobal's return to racing after a 27-month hiatus.

Surgeglobal is entered in race 3 on the Dec. 29 Turfway card, a 5 1/2-furlong claiming sprint on the all-weather track.  Her last race came Sept. 22, 2006 at Hoosier Park, and her only time in the money was a maiden claiming win three months prior, at Ruidoso Downs.

Her last recorded public works included two efforts on the synthetic track at Turfway Park -- five furlongs (1:03.60 breezing) the Saturday before Christmas, and four furlongs on the same track (52.00 breezing) back on Nov. 22.

Even though she's running for a tag and has a difficult comeback ahead of her, I'm excited to see Surgeglobal back at the track.  She was bred to race and it's great that she's getting a second opportunity to prove herself.  I'll be cheering her on this afternoon.

Well...

Last by 20+ lengths was kind of expected.

But, why in the world didn't they at least take her to Beulah Park where she would've at least hit the board ???

Well... as CRob noted, our girl Surgeglobal failed to impress on her return.  She came in at the end of the 12-horse field at odds of almost 100-1.  Fingers crossed that this was just a test race and part of her conditioning -- I've got to think that if the mare's been in training for multiple months, her new trainer has good hopes for her.  I'll continue to follow her career and report it here -- the ups AND downs!

Quick update -- I see that Surgeglobal is entered again in a cheap six-furlong claiming race at Beulah Park in a couple of days.  She'll run Jan. 10 in race 7.

Bit late on this update:  Surgeglobal has now been in the money 100% of the time in 2009.  :-)  In this case, that means she took a distant third in her claiming race four days ago -- but hey, she was in the money in her second race back after a 15-month layoff.  Good for her and her connections.
