This Week's Contest Races

Rules

Starting on January 8th and continuing until January 16th, players may choose a stable of ten horses, as well as one trainer and one jockey, that will earn points based on their performances in Kentucky Derby prep races. The number of points earned will be equal to the Kentucky Derby qualification points available in each race. For example, if a player chooses American Pharoah as one of their ten horses and he wins the San Felipe Stakes (gr. II), then that player would earn 50 points, the same as the number of qualification points that American Pharoah would gain for winning the race. Additionally, if that player had also chosen Bob Baffert as their trainer, they would gain another 50 points since Baffert is the trainer of American Pharoah.

Also, each week, players will be able to designate one of their horses as a "prime" horse, and will earn double the number of points for that horse's performance that week. For example, if a player were to designate Texas Red as their prime horse on the week of the Santa Anita Derby, and Texas Red won the race, they would earn 200 points, double the standard 100 points. Designating a prime horse each week will not be a requirement, but it will add a bit of additional intrigue to the contest, and give players a chance to gain extra points if they think one of their horses is ready to run a big race. To designate your prime horse each week, simply leave a comment on the most recent Unlocking Winners blog post naming your chosen horse.

Players will get a chance to add three additional horses to their stables starting March 23rd and ending March 27th, just prior to the start of the 100-point prep races. The contest will culminate with the Kentucky Derby, which will offer points of 300-100-50-25 to the top four finishers. Whoever accumulates the most points by the end of the contest wins bragging rights as the Unlocking Winners Kentucky Derby Trail handicapper of the year! :) Good luck to all!
