After a slightly hesitant start to his stud career, champion older horse Lemon Drop Kid has rebounded to establish himself as a very solid racehorse sire. With his first crop having just turned 6, he has 23 stakes winners, eight of them graded and three grade I. He enjoyed a good weekend, with millionaire Cosmonaut winning the Tampa Bay Stakes and Candy Ball the Bayou Handicap at the Fair Grounds.

Cosmonaut is an A rated horse on the basis on the Kingmambo/Seattle Slew cross. What's interesting about that is that the star performer for the cross has been Lemon Drop Kid himself (out of a Seattle Slew mare). Since Cosmonaut is out of a mare by Seattle Slew's son Capote, he has Seattle Slew 3 x 3. The pattern of breeding a stallion back over a mare from his dam's sire line is one that is going to be worthy of further investigation down the line.

Candy Bar is an A++ rated horse on the basis of the Lemon Drop Kid/Private Account cross. The success of this cross could have been predicted from TrueNicks as Kingmambo himself earns an A+ rating with Private Account mares, one of his stakes winners on the cross being French One Thousand Guineas (Fr-I) victress Bluemamba.
