Bright Start

A young horse making a bright beginning from among the less expensive ranks is A.P. Indy’s son Jump Start, who is currently advertised at a fee of $10,000.

With Littlemiss Allison’s win in the Sam Houston Oaks (her fourth black type win), following on from the success of Sir Whimsey in the Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. II) the previous weekend, Jump Start is currently the leading third-season sire of 2008. Sir Whimsey (out of a Star de Naskra mare, and TrueNicks rated A+) is one of four stakes winners from Jump Start’s first crop, and is his second graded winner, following the 2007 Santa Ynez Stakes (gr. II) victress Jump On In.

He’s already got two stakes winners from his second crop, with Littlemiss Allison being joined by Mrs. Began, winner of the Princess Elizabeth Stakes, the premier contest for Canadian-bred juvenile fillies. Out of a mare by Bertrando, Littlemiss Allison is a TrueNicks A++ rated horse. Her pedigree is also particularly interesting, as her second dam is by Miswaki, a brother to the granddam of Jump Start.

With his 2008 fee reduced from last year’s $20,000, Jump Start might be a useful play for the commercial breeder as well as those breeding to race.
