Ashford Stud sire Grand Slam lived up to his name over the Easter weekend with three stakes winners in three days. On March 21, French-raced and Kentucky-bred 3-year-old War Officer earned a first stakes win by capturing the Prix Montenica at Deauville. An A++ TrueNicks rated horse, War Officer is out of the Storm Cat mare Wonder Woman.
The next day, and an ocean away, another Grand Slam 3-year-old, Amazing Results, captured the Grindstone Stakes on turf at the Fair Grounds. Amazing Results is out of the Lord At War (ARG) mare Ioya Two, and as he and graded winner Sprung are two of the only three runners for the sire out mares by Lord At War, it's no surprise that he is a TrueNicks A++ rated horse.
The stakes winning trio was completed the next day when 5-year-old Grand Minit won the Lagniappe Classic Stakes, also at the Fair Grounds. He is out of a mare by Malagra, a son of Majestic Light. Rated on the Gone West/Majestic Light cross, Grand Minit achieves a B+ TrueNicks score.
War Officer and Amazing Results are just two of a Grand Slam current crop of 3-year-olds, which also includes the Gotham Stakes (gr . III) winner Visionaire (out of a French Deputy mare, and TrueNicks rated A) and the Capote Stakes winner Grand Minstrel (out of a daughter of Pleasant Colony, and rated A). So, all in all, Grand Slam looks set for a bright 2008.
