Zenyatta (Street Cry (IRE) - Vertigineux, by Kris S.) further enhanced the burgeoning reputation of her sire on Saturday with a victory in the Apple Blossom Handicap (gr. I). The undefeated 4-year-old follows Street Sense (TrueNicks, SRO), Tomcito (a Peruvian Derby winner, who was third in last week's Florida Derby (gr. I) on his U.S. debut), Majestic Roi ,and Cry and Catch Me as the fifth group or grade I winner from Street Cry's (TrueNicks, SRO) first two crops. Darley's promising young son of Machiavellian is also represented by six other group or graded winners.
Owned by Jerry Moss - co-founder of A & M records - and his wife Ann, the filly was named "Zenyatta" after the third album produced by The Police (Zenyatta Mondatta, apparently a nonsense name made up to reflect the African heritage of the group's reggae-flavored music).
A half sister to millionaire Balance, Zenyatta earns an A+ TrueNicks rating on the basis of the Street Cry/Hail to Reason cross which has also produced Cry and Catch Me. This is a version of the Mr. Prospector/Roberto cross that brings together the very similarly-bred Gold Digger (dam of Mr. Prospector) and Bramalea (dam of Roberto).
